Be it known that I, WILL C. NEAHR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plug-Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates more parlamps of the series and insert the extension plug in its place. To do this properly, the current should first be .cut ofi' from the lamps, but as this is more or less trouble, more often the workman merely removes one of the lamps from the circuit and introduces the plug. As a result, arcs are created, which are apt to burn out the contact elements.
One of the primary objects of the present invention is to provide a plug-receiving socket which may be so connected up to the lamp series or the like that the introduction of a plug into the socket automatically cuts out one of the lamps when the plug is being seated, thereby eliminating both the annoyance of first opening the circuit and the danger of arcs if it is not done.
A furtherand important object is to provide a structure that is exceedingly simple and practicable, and one that will take the standard plug or plug fittings.

Formed in the outer-face of the base 5, and extending from one corner to the other, is a diagonal slot 7 thatextends but part portion s'forming seats 8. Located in the said socket element 6 is a plug-receiving shell 10, which is preferably of the standard screw type, having an open bottom and inturned bottom flanges 11 that rest upon the bottom of the socket element on opposite sides of the portion of the slot 7 which intersects the same. Through one of these flanges is passed a holding bolt 12,
the nut '13 of which is located in the inner end of the slot 9. In said slot 9 is also arranged a conducting strip 14, the inner end of which is secured to the other of the inturned flanges 11 by a screw 15. The outer end of the strip 14 is engaged with a holding bolt 16 that passes transversely through the corner of the base or block 5, its upper end being located in a recess 17 in the outer face of the block, said bolt forming a terminal binding post.

The spring 18 is mounted on one of the seats 8, and is held in place The other spring 19 has one end located on the other seat 8, and is held in placeby -a bolt 21, also forming a binding post. The opposite end of the spring 19 underlaps the free a lamp series, is indicated in Fig. 4, wherein the circuit which is designated generally by the reference numeral 23, includes the 7 binding posts 16 and 20 being connected thereto by the wires 24: and 25. The binding post 21 is also connected in the series, as
shown by the wire 26. As long as there is no plug in the socket shell 10, the spring 19 will be in contact with the spring 18 and a circuit will thus be completed through all the lamps. If, however, an extension plug,

Having thus, fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
' 1. In a device'of the' 'cha'racterset forth, the combination with a base having an outstanding socketelement and a slot in the base that intersects the bottom of the socket element, of a plug holding shell in the socket element, and coacting make-and-break elements located in the slot, one of said elements being disposed in the path of a plug 2. In a device of the/character set forth, the combination with a single piece base having an integral outstanding socket element and a transverse slot in its outer face that extends beneath the socket element and intersects the bottom thereof, of a screw shell secured in the socket element, and to acting makeand break elements mounted on the base, one of said elements being disposed longitudinally of the slot and having an outstanding portion projecting above the same into the inner end of the screw shell.

In a device ofthe character set forth, the combination with a single-piece base having an outstanding integral socket element, a transverse groove in its outer face extending beneath the bottom of the socket element, and an angularly' disposed groove in its rear face, of a screw plug receiving shell located in the socket element, a conducting strip located in the rear groove, a binding post extending through the base and engaged with the strip, a fastening device for the screw shell disposed at one side of the outer groove and engaging said strip, contact elements located in the outer groove, one of said elements being a spring and having an outwardly bowed portion extending into the inner end of the screw shell, and binding posts securing the contact strips in position.
