Description
@uitrit tstr etent @ffice W. F. CHRISMAN, OF TRE'NYTO'N, TENNESSEE.
Letters Patent 1Y0-81,877, dated September 8, 1868.
IMPROVBD PESSABY.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN: p 4
Be it known that I, W. F. VGnRIsMAN, of Trenton, in the county of Gibson, and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and improved Pessary; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make Aand use the same, reference beinghad toV the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- The drawing represents a central vertical section of my invention, showing also in red color one means forv indating the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved vaginal and uterine supporter, known generally'as a pessary. v w. l
It consists of an elastic air-vessel, composed of a combination of textile fabric and India rubber, the layer of India rubber being interposed between the textile material, thus uniting the two layers ofthe latter'.
It consists, also, ofthe form given to the instrument, together with astop-cock attachement therefor, which vlatter is employed in infiating the same when in the vagina.
The instrument is composed of a cylindrical part, A, having concave heads or ends, B B, the concavity of which is retained by means of a cen'tral or axial cylinder, or conical tube C, of the same material as the other parte. A
This tube joins the two heads B B, as shown, and being somewhat shorter than the cylindrical part, serves to retain the heads in a depressed or concave form when the instrument is inlated.
The tube also serves` to receive the nger, in order to extract they instrument with facility.
The instrument is indated bymeans of an air-globe, D, of rubber or other suitable material, havingtapipe, b, which tits into the stopcock a, aixed in the lower head of the instrument.
This operation can thus be easily performed bythe patient, who, after inating the instrument to the proper degree, as determined by herself, turns-the handle of the stop-cock and withdraws the pipe. I
A rubber tube may be substituted for the air-vessel D, lone end of the tube being connected with the stopcock, and the other retained in the patients mouth, who can thus inate the pessary with like result.
In constructing this pessary I useine linen and the best quality of soft rubber.
This invention, when in. situ, serves to support both the uterus and the walls of the vagina in a safe and easy manner, thus avoiding irritation of the parts, and from its form, lightness, and elasticity, is beneficial in a. marked degree in those pathological conditions ofthe uterus and`vagina for which it is designed.
I claim as new, and desire to -secure by Letters Patent- A pessary, of' the form,A construction, and method of operation substantially as shown and described.
W. F. CHRISMAN.
