DEVICE FOR DRENCHING HORSES.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, NED S. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Drenching Horses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for drenching horses and the like; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, as follows:

Figure 1 shows a section on the line 1 l of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 a side elevation.

A marks the receptacle into which the medicinal liquid may be placed. Secured to the bottom of this receptacle is the nozzle B. This nozzle has the part b and the rearwardly-extending part b. A passage b2 extends through this nozzle. A passage a is arranged in the bottom of the receptacle leading to the passage b2 and is controlled by the valve C. A stem c extends upwardly from this valve through the top a of the receptacle. The stem extends through a lug (1,2, projecting from the side of the receptacle, and the spring c is arranged between this lug and the valve to keep the valve seated. A lever c2, secured to the upper end of the stem, is pivoted on a lug a3, extending upwardly from the top a. A chain c3 is suspended on the end of the lever c2, with a thumb-ring c4 at the end. The size of the receptacle is such and the length of the chain so arranged that when the receptacle is grasped by the operater the valve may be opened by the action of the thumb on the ring c4. The top a is funnel-shaped, and the opening through it is preferably closed by a valve or cover a4. This is secured to the top 0. by a hinge a5. A handle a6 is provided for opening this cover, and a spring a7 closes it. In lilling the receptacle this cover is opened and the top acting as a funnel directs the material to the receptacle. With the cover closed the receptacle is entirely closed, so that it may be handled without fear of wasting the liquid contained in it. When the device is in place and the valve opened, it is desirable to provide a vent, so that the liquid may run out quickly. This I accomplish by providing the lugs c5 on the stems c in such position as to engage the cover a4 as the stem c is lifted to raise the valve, so that as the valve is opened the opening through the top forming the vent is also opened.

I have provided the gage for indicating the amount of material in the receptacle. It comprises the float D, Jfrom which the stem d extends. This stem passes through the opening a8 in the top and is provided with the graduations d', by means of which the level of liquid in the receptacle may be ascertained.

With the nozzle formed as shown it may be introduced into the side of the mouth and then the part b turned toward the rear, the lateral part b extending through the wall of the mouth and the part 1)/ extending rearwardly toward the throat of the animal. By having a valve connection between this and the receptacle the nozzle may be iirst put in place before the liquid is turned in. By making the nozzle of this shape and providing the valve for preventing the How of liquid until the nozzle is in such position the receptacle may be maintained in an upright position while being inserted. This permits of the use of the gage, comprising the float and graduated stema Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a drenching device, the combination of a receptacle, a part b extending laterally from the receptacle, and a rearwardly-extending part t said parts forming a nozzle unobstructed from the end of the part to beyond the turn between the parts to permit of the nozzle being inserted in the side of the mouth with the jaws closed, and turned to bring the part b through the side of the ward the throat, and a valve controlling the flow of liquid from the receptacle.

2. In a drenching device, the combination of a receptacle, a part b extending laterally from the receptacle, and a rearwardlyextending part b said parts forming a nozzle unobstructed from the end of the part b to beyond the turn between the parts to permit of the nozzle ,being inserted in the side of the mouth with the jaws closed, and turned to bring the part t through the side of the mouth, and the part b extending into or toward the throat, and a valve controlling the How of liquid from the receptacle, a stem extending from said valve through the top of mouth, and the part t extending into or to- ICO the receptacle, and means vWithin the reach of the operators hand grasping the receptacle, for tripping the valve.

3. In a drenching device, the combination of the receptacle A, the lateral part b, and the rearwardlyextending part t forming the nozzleB unobstructed from the end of the part b to beyond the turn `between the parts, the valve C controlling the connection between the receptacle and the nozzle, and the stem c extending from the valve through the top of the receptacle, a lever c2 extending from the stem over the side of the receptacle, a lug a3 forming the fulcrum for the lever c2, a chain c3 secured to the lever, and the thumb-ring c, secured to the chain.

4. In a drenching device, the combination of a receptacle for the liquid, said receptacle being provided with a vent, a nozzle'extending from said receptacle, a valve controlling the flow of liquid from the receptacle to the nozzle, means for closing the vent, and means for opening thelvent and valve simultaneously.

5. In a drenching device, the combination with a receptacle, a nozzle extending therefrom, and a funnel-top arranged on said receptacle having an opening through which ymaterial may pass from the top into the receptacle, said opening also forming a vent for the receptacle, means for closing said vent and means for opening said vent.

6. In a drenching device, the combination with a receptacle, a nozzle extending therefrom, and a funnel-top arranged on said receptacle, having an opening through which material may pass from the top into the receptacle, said opening also forming a vent for the receptacle, means for closing said vent, a valve controlling the flow of liquid from the receptacle to the nozzle, and means for simultaneously opening the valve and the vent.

7. In a drenching device, the combination of a receptacle for the liquid, a nozzle extending therefrom, a funnel-shaped top a on the receptacle, having an opening therefrom for the passage of the material, a cover of* for said opening, a hingefor securing said cover to the top, a spring a7 for holding said cover in closed position.

8. In a drenching device, the combination of Vthe receptacle A having the passage a through the bottom thereof, the lateral part l) and rearwardly-extending part b forming a nozzle B unobstructed from the end of the part b to beyond the turn between the parts, the valve C controlling the oV ening, a stem c extending from the valve t rough the top, the funnel-shaped top a having an opening for the introduction of the material, said opening also forming a vent, a cover a4 for said opening, and means on the stem c for opening said cover.

9. In a drenching device, the combination of a receptacle, a part b extending laterally from the receptacle, and a rearwardly-extending part b said part forming a nozzle unobstructed from the end of the part b to beyond the turn between the parts to permit of the nozzle being inserted in the side of the mouth with jaws closed, and turned to bring the part I) through the side of the mouth, and the part 1)/ extending into or toward the throat, and a valve controlling the flow of liquid from the receptacle, the iioat D having the graduated stems d extending upwardly therefrom through the top of the receptacle.
