To all ZUh/OWQ/ it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J AMES CARY LAWHON and GEORGE PELRoE LONG, citizens of the United States, residing at Lake City, in the county of Columbia and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Resawing- Machine; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in resawing-machines, and it has forits object to improve the construction of resawing-machines and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one, designed to be used in connection with a planing-machine for resawing the boards or lumber as the same leaves the planing-machine and adapted to employ a horizontal circular saw and capable of ready adjustment to enable the saw to operate either horizontally or at an inclination.
A further object of the invention is to provide a resawing-machine of this character in which the horizontal circular saw will be per fectly guided and be capable of both horizontal and vertical adjustment.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification and in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a plan view of a resawing-machine constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, partly in section. Fig. 4 is a partial side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal sectional view illustrating the construction of the upper portion of the machine. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view on the line 7 7 of Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view on the line 8 8 of Fig. 1. Fig. 9 is a detached perspective view of a portion of the lumberguide and the detachable guide-bar.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a bed-plate designed to be mounted on the frame 2 of a planing-machine and provided with adjustable lumber-guides 3, having adjustable guide members 4 for engaging the lumber. These guide members 4, which are arranged at the inner faces of the lumberguides 3, are slotted to receive set-screws 5 and are beveled or rounded at their inner ends to permit the lumber to pass readily beneath them and are adapted to hold the lumber while it is being sawed.
The lumber is cut by a-horizontal circular saw 6, mounted on a vertical saw-arbor or mandrel 7 and operating in a longitudinal slot 8 of a horizontal saw-guide 9, which is disposed longitudinally of the machine at one side of the path of the lumber and which is composed of a lower body portion and an up per adjustable and detachable bar or member 10. The bar or member 10 is provided at its ends with slots 11 and 12 to receive fastening devices 13 and 14, which also operate in slots 15 and 16 of the adjacent lumber-guide and the outer end of the body portion. The slots 11 and 12 extend longitudinally or horizontally of the member 10, and the other slots 15 and 16, which pass transversely through the inner and outer ends of the lower portions of the saw-guide, are disposed vertically. This permits the upper member of the lumber-guide to be adjusted both longitudinally and vertically. The adjacent lumber-guide is provided with a face 15 to receive the inner end of the bar or member; but this face 15 may be formed on the inner end of the body portion, as will be readily understood. The fastening devices which operate in said slots are removable to permit the bar or member 10 to be detached when it is desired to change the saw.
The saw-guide is provided with upper and lower guide-screws 18 and 19, arranged vertically and adapted to maintain the saw perfectly steady to insure accurate work. The screws 18 and 19 are arranged in suitable threaded apertures of the upper and lower portions of the horizontal saw-guides.
The lumber is prevented from pinching and binding against the saw by means of a horizontal separator 29, extending from one side of the saw-guide and having a shank 21, adjustably mounted in the slot or opening of the saw-guide. The shank is provided with a threaded outer portion to receive a clamping-nut and is provided with a clampingplate 22 for engaging one of the side plates of the saw-guide.
The saw mandrel or arbor which carries a pulley 23 is j ournaled in suitable bearings of an adjustable frame on bracket 24, which is substantially U-shaped and which is provided with upper and lower sectional bearings. The bearing-bracket 24 is mounted on an adjustable saw-carrying frame 25, which is provided with upper and lower vertical slots receiving clampingscrews 27, having dovetailed heads 28 at their inner ends to slide in dovetailed grooves 29 of the bearingbracket. The vertical slots 26 and the grooves 29, which are horizontal, admit of the bearing 24 being adjustable both vertically and horizontally. This adjustment is effected by means of inner and outer horizontal screws 30 and 31 and a lower vertical screw 32. The inner and outer screws which are mounted in threaded openings of ears or flanges of the saw-carrying frame engage the inner and outer edges of the bearing-bracket, and the vertical screw which is similarly mounted is located at the bottom of the bearing-bracket at a point directly beneath the lower end of the saw arbor or mandrel.
The adjustable saw-carrying frame is composed of asubstantially U-shaped portion and a depending leg. The upper U-shaped portion is mounted on a horizontal pivot 33, and the leg is adjustably secured to a foot-rest 34. The pivot 33 extends outward in a horizontal direction from an attachment-plate 35,which is mounted on the frame of the planing-machine, and the upper portion of the saw-carrying frame is provided with an enlargement 36, having an opening to receive the pivot. The upper portion of the saw-carrying frame is secured in its adjustment by means which pierces the enlargement and engages the pivot. The outer end of the pivot 33 is threaded. to receive a nut 33, and this nut, which is arranged on the threaded portion of the pivot, engages the enlargement. By this construction the upper portion of the frame is firmly clamped in its adjustment.
The foot-rest 34, which is disposed. transversely of the machine, has an attachmentflange 39, which is secured to the floor, and the upper portion of the foot-rest is provided with arcuate slot 40, in which is arranged a screw 41, having an enlarged head 42 to receive an adjusting-screw 43, arranged at right angles to the screw 41 and mounted in a threaded flange or car 41' of the foot-rest. The screw 41 passes through the lower end of the leg and is provided at its outer end with a clamping-nut 44, which binds the leg firmly against the foot-rest. This lateral adjustment of the saw-carrying frame and its pivot permits the circular saw to be set at the de sired angle.
The outer end of the horizontal saw-guide is supported by a post 45 and is firmly held against lateral movement by inclined braces 46 and 47, extending from the outer ends of the saw-guide to the planing-machine.
What we claim is- 1. The combination with the lumberguides, and a horizontal circular saw, of a saw-guide, having one face alined with and forming a continuation of one of the lumberguides.
2. The combination with the horizontallyadjustable lumber-guides, of a horizontal circular saw, and a saw-guide, having one face alined with and forming a continuation of one of the lumber-guides and adjustable therewith.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with the work-guides of a planing-machine, of a horizontal saw-guide extending therefrom, and having one face alined therewith and forming a continuation thereof, a saw operating in the guide, a post supporting the outer portion of the guide, and braces extending from the outer portion of the guide to the said frame, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the lumberguides and a pivotally-mounted saw-carrying frame, of a vertical saw-shaft 'shiftable horizontally in directions parallel to the feed of the lumber-guide and on the saw-carrying frame, and a horizontal circular saw carried by the vertical saw-shaft.
5. The combination with the lumberguides and the pivotally-mounted saw-carrying frame, a frame movable horizontally on the pivotally-mounted frame in the, directions parallel to the feed of the lumber-guides, set-screws carried by the pivotally-mounted frame and engaging the horizontally-movable frame on opposite sides a vertical sawshaft carried by the horizontally-movable frame, and a horizontal circular saw carried by the vertical shaft.
6. The combination with the pivotallymounted saw-carrying frame, provided with vertical slots, of bolts adjustable in said slots and provided with dovetailed heads, a bearing-bracket, provided with' dovetailed grooves in which the dovetailed heads fit to permit the horizontal adjustment of the bearing-frame, a vertical shaft carried by the bearing-frame, and a horizontal circular saw carried by the vertical shaft.
