To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, @SCAR Hnlnnonr, a
subject of the King oi Greet Britain, residing in the {zit}T o London, England, have invented certain .new and useful improvements in Methods of' Forming a. Herinetic Seem in Sheet Metal ;b and l do hereby.r dernere the iollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description oi the invention, such es will enable others skilled in the art to which it eppen tnins to make and use the same, reference beingl had tothe accompanying .lrstwings, and to letters of reference mei-hed thereon, which iorm a part oi this specification.
My invention. relates to folded or lock' seems for sheet-metal vessels g and it consists in e novel method oi forming :1 hermetic joi'nt 'or scum in such wherebyr the minimum layers only nre necessary, so that metal is saved, weer and teur on the Atorining inechincryreduced, and the output correspondin gly increased.
My invention is full),v illustrated 'in the eccoinpenying drawings, in which i Figure il" is e transverse sectional 'View of the seein as it stands-after the iirst step of the operation of forming the sanne. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View of the seem after the saine has been longitudinally grooved,
und Fig. 3 a transverse sectional view of .the seein when. comple ted.
The .seein is shown in the drawings as the' side seein. of e con; but it should be under stood that in v invention is applicable in cer-- tain aspects thereof to other seems.
ev in the drawings 'is e ilenge formed, preferably, et right ongles to one edge portion. oi the sheet which furnis the body of `the een, and b e. rebond formed, preferably, at right ongles to the opposite edge portion oi said sheetA As showin this flange and rebond 'preferably proiect inwardly, the Harige being received by the rebend L. The flange and rebend being thus esseinbled by e suitable ineens acti-ug to displace the nietel oi" the parts ,longitinlinelly and for a portion only of the Width thereof, n bend is formed et c in thern, which has the etl'ect oi' producing e groove d in one side o'l each fold e f g and e beed l@ on the other side thereof, beads end grooves ii'ting into each other'. The thus joined end i'orrned flange a and rebond 5 are then bent over es one 'to end against the adjoininff'fece ot 'the pt rtion of the metal from which the flange e immediately projects, the layers or *folds e, j, and 'g and the part .oi the sheet immediate y adjacent flange a. beine' cornpectly compressed together as tightly possible with the View to `avoiding the torinetion of all in terstioes or les; leopenin gs of whata l ever naturef' Thereupon the portion of the sheet which .is 'immediately adjacent the flange (L an d which directly coincides with or is opposedtothe layers e, f, and q lis grooved on the outside in coineidencewith the groove d, thus forming ahead. on the inside of said `portion which fits into andV is coincident. with the groove d o't' the layer e. The growing whereby the bead j is formed is above described es occurring after the compression oi the several layers; but it should be under stood that the compressing and grooving 'tney be accomplished in both one end the seine operation.
Formed in the manner above described, ay senm is produced in Wh.l -h the minimum t... rnetal is necessary and which will be found to be periectlgT hermetic. By `gliephiciiig the metal of the assembled flange it and. rebend in; the manner stated, so as to produce eoinciilinfy grooves and heads, when the esseniM bled ilange and rebend are bent over in to the position shown in Fi 3 there is e certain w ping together of the surfaces oi the layers -Wise exist. The grooving which forms the bead j, moreover, results in a further 'rc strictcd compacting end intimate conteetingvv of the layers ef g in that restricted portion thereof delineated by the previous growing of sai d levers. f
Heving thus 'fully described in "'inventloin what I claim es new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf
l. The method of 'forming o hermetic senin in sheet metal which consists in forming :i re bend in one edge portion and inserting the other edge portieri therein, groei/ing the lann nated body thus. produced longitudinally so es to produce intertitting grooves end be. in the layers thereof, and then bending tm. thus grooved laminated bodj7 over out oi the plane of initial assemblage oi" seid edge por. tions, substantially as described.
2.' The method of forming a. hermetic seein l Dvithe portion of the metal in sheet metal which consists in forming a' `rebend in one edge portion and inserting the Otlher edge portion therein, grooving and i c pressing the llaminated body thus proddxbd longitudinall soas to produce inter'- tting grooves and eads in the layers thereof, and then bending the thus grooved laniilDated body over out of the plane of initial as semblage of said edge portions, substantially as deseribed.`
3. The method of forming-a hermetic seani in sheet metal Which consists in forming a rebend in one edge portion and inserting the other edge portion therein, grooving and compressing the laminated body thus produced longitudinally so as to produce interfitting grooves and beads in the layers there.- of, and then bending the thus grooved laniinated body over and compressing it against adjacent one of said edge `ortons, substantially as described.
4. ilhe method ol' forming a hermetic seani in sheet bend in other edge portion therein, grooving and metal which consists in forming a rez' one edge portion and inserting thc I duced longitudinally so as to produce interl fitting grooves and beads in the layers therebody over against the portion of the metal l adjacent one of said edge portions, and then lgrooving said portion coincident with the groove of said grooved laminated body, sub-` l stantially as described.
5. The method of forming a hermetic joint in a sheet-metal look-seam having longitudinal beads on certain of its layers which consists in compressing the layers of the seain to cause thc bea-ds to intimately contact with adjacent layers, and thcn bending the seam, I compressed, over around an axis parallel with the seani. whereby to ca use the beads to l wipe against the adjacent layers, substani tially as described.
i In testimony that I claim the foregoing I ,l have hereuntoset my hand this 24th day of l February, 1905.
