Be it known that we, ARNOLD J. SHARY and THOMAS L. ANTHONY, citizens of the United States, residing at VVilber, in the county of Saline and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in indmill Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in means for transmitting power from a vertically-reciprocating windmill pump-rod to a churn, washing machine, or other device which can be suitably driven by such means.
The primarjT object of our improvements is to provide inexpensive means which can be easily erected by unskilled labor and which can be adapted by simple adjustments to the varying strokes of the dashers of different makes end sizes of churns or the movements of the handles or drive-wheels of different styles of `washing-machines.
A further object is to provide an attachment that can be quickly and easily thrown out of operative connection.
Other objects of general utility will be apparent from an examination of our invention as hereinafter disclosed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, Figure l shows in side elevation one application of our invention in an approved form. Fig. 2 shows a slightly-modified form of a portion of the transmitting elements. Figs. 3 and 4 are fragmentary details of portions of the apparatus shown in the other views. Fig. 5 is a cross-section through the churn-handle shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the parts of the apparatus as disclosed in the drawings, A represents a portion of an'ordinary windmill pump-rod to which a bracket-casting a is bolted.
A represents an upright piece bolted to the cross-bars of the windmill-tower.
D is a post which is erected at a convenient distance from the tower.
Mounted on the upright A and the post are pulleys b', on which are run a wire or cable B, the ends of which are secured to the bracket a. From the post an arm d eX- tends horizontally, and same is supported by a brace d2, secured thereto and to the post. On the outer end of the arm d are rotatably mounted tWo disks O, through which are formed a plurality of holes c4, which register, so that byinserting a pinnor bolt therethrough Specification of Letters Patent.

the disks may be locked together. Bolted loosely to one of the disks is a lever c', in which several holes are provided to receive a bolt which pivotally connects the lever to the arm d. To the other end of the lever the cable B is connected. To the other disk a lever c2 is secured by a bolt passing through one of the holes c". The lever c2 has a series of holes c5 near its outer end, and through one of these passes a bolt which loosely connects one end of a link c6 to said lever. As shown in Fig. l, the link cG is loosely bolted to the handle e/ of the churn E by a bolt passing through one of the holes c7. As shown in Fig. 2, the link is connected to the dasher f of a churn F by a collar Af 2, which is connected with the link by a bolt passing through one of the holes c7. This collar has a setscrew by which its connection with the dasher may be adjusted and which also permits the ready removal of the collar from the dasher.
It will be apparent that the openings d3 in the arm d, c3 in the lever c', c4 in the disk O, O5 in the lever c2, and c7 in the link c(5 afford a wide range of adjustability, so that the apparatus can be readily adapted to various uses and objects.
The reciprocation of the pump-rod will, through its connection with the cable B, cause the lever c to rock on its pivot-bearing on the arm d, and this will produce an oscillation of the disk O, to which the lever is connected by a bolt passing through a slot in its outer end. When the disk thus operated is bolted to its companion disk, the lever c2 will be oscillated and communicate its motion to the link c, which in turn will drive the handle or dasher as described.
