To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Barbers Appliances, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to barbers appliances; and the object thereof is to construct a device for barber's use particularly adapt ed for shampooing, massaging, and removing loose hair, dust, and dandruff from the head, and, furthermore, for invigorating the scalp.

The invention further aims to construct a barber's appliance for the purposes set forth which shall be simple in its construction, strong, durable, efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects .in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and

wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of a barbers appliance constructed in accordance with this invention; but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modi fications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a barbers appliance constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the brush. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view there of, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the removable holdfast devices for connecting the brush in position.

A device constructed in accordance with this invention for barbers use to be employed for shampooing, massaging, and removing loose hair from the head, as well as invigorating the scalp, comprises what may be termed a rotatable and detachable brush, a retatable and detachable coupling for the brush, an operating mechanism for the coupling, and a handle carried by the operating mechanism to permit of positioning the appliance or device at various points upon the head.

The brush is substantially conical in contour, and the back is preferably formed of two or more me1nbersas shown, two which are indicated by the reference characters 1 2. The members 1 2 are fixedly secured together by any suitable means, so that when the brush is set up it will be substantially conical in contour. Secured to each of the members 1 2 are the bristles 3, the bristles of one member converging toward the bristles of the other member, so that when the bristles are set up and grouped the group will conform in contour to the configuration of the members 1 2 when set up. The bristles are so arranged as to enable them to be readily cleaned. The bristles do not extend to the outer edge of the members 1 2, but terminate at a point removed therefrom, and the bristles do not extend to the inner edge of the members 1 2, but terminate at a point removed therefrom. By arranging the bristles in such manner an open space 4 is provided, which prevents the bristles from tangling or matting the hair of the person when the device is operated.

The coupling consists of a substantially cone-shaped member 5, to which is detachably connected, through the medium of the screws 6 and removablethumb-nuts 7, the brush. I By such. an arrangement when it is desired to remove the brush, so as to replace it by a new one or to clean it, such mode of procedure can be readily had.

The device can be operated manually or from a source of power; but as shown. the manual operation is employed.

he operating mechanism for rotating the brush consists of a driven shaft 8, carrying a beveled pinion 9, which is engaged by a bevelgear 10, fixed on the drive-shaft ll, operated through the medium of the crank and handle 12. The driven shaft 8 is detachably connected, through the medium of the plate 13 and removable holdfast devices 14, to the coupling. From the foregoing construction when the drive-shaft 11 is operated the coupling and brush will be caused to rotate.

The handle consists of a grip 15, attached to a housing 16, in which is arranged the driven shaft 8, vided with a bearing 17 for the inner end of the drive-shaft l1 and is further provided with a bearing arm 18, through which the drive-shaft 11 extends, and between the arm 18 and the housing 16 upon the shaft 11 is fixed the gear 10.

By constructing the brush conical in c011- tour it will conform to the shape of the head when using the device, and by providing the grip l5the device can be positioned to any and said housing 16 is pro point of the head desired, The housing 16 is preferably constructed of metal, so as to make the device somewhat heavy and cause it when being operated to keep in contact with the head, W 'ch vastly facilitates the function derived from the use of the device when operating it.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A device of the character described, comprising a conical-shaped brush having a clearance-opening at the top thereof, a conicalshaped coupling mounted upon said brush and having an opening at the top thereof,

headed screws bearing against the back of the brush and extending throu h the coupling, thumb-nuts engaging said screws for 1 connecting the coupling and brush together,
