Description

No. 816,949. PATENTBD APR. 3, 1906. J. STEWART. CHIMNEY FASTBNER FOR LAMPS.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 26. 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT onrron.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 3, 1.906.
Application filed September 26,1905. Serial No. 230,113.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN STEWART, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tarentum, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney Fasteners for Lamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in chimney-fasteners for lamps; and the invention relates more particularly to a novel form of fastener adap ted to be used in connection with oil-lamps for retaining glass chimneys upon the burner of the lamp.
The main object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive fastener that can be readily embodied in the construction of the burner of a lamp to engage a chimney and firmly retain it upon the burner.
Briefly described, my improved fastener consists of three lugs which are formed integral or carried by the burner of a lamp, two of these lugs being adapted to engage the edge of a chimney, while the third lug carries a spring member which is adapted to engage the edge of the chimney and hold said chimney in engagement with the other two lugs. To accomplish this, I specially construct a chimney for use in connection with my improved fastener, and the detail construction of the same, together with the detail construction of the fastener, will be more fully described hereinafter.
Reference Will now be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts through out the several views, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a lamp and chimney constructed in accord ance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line m :10 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of a chimney constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a burner equipped with my improved fastener.
In the accompanying drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the body or bowl of a lamp adapted to contain an illuminatingoil, such as coal-oil or kerosene. The, bowl of the lamp supports a burner 2, the general contour and wick-feeding mechanism being of a conventional form commonly used.
My invention residesinproviding the flange 3 of the burner with three radially-disposed equidistant lugs 4 4 and 5, these lugs being preferably made out of a material similar to the flange 3 and in practice are preferably stamped or sheared from the flange and bent upwardly, forming hook shaped cleats or lugs, which are clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and. 3 of the drawings. In the lug 5 is fixed the end of a resilient member 6, the outer end of this member being bent to form a loop 7, that serves as a handle or grip. As shown in Fig. 2, the loop 7 is formed 011 the inner side of its circumference with an inversely-arcshaped portion 10, corresponding in curvature to the periphery of the base of the chimney designed to be supported, whereby the member 6 may the more effectively bear against or grip said chimney to prevent the same from slipping or tilting.
In Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings a chimney 8 is clearly illustrated, and this chimney is adapted to be used in connection with the burner 2. It will be observed that the lower edge of the chimney is provided with a pcripheral flange 9, and when the chimney is mounted upon the burner the lugs or cleats 4 4, together with the resilient member 6, engage the peripheral flange and firmly retain the chimney in position upon the burner. In placing the chimney upon the burner the peripheral flange 9 is placed in the lugs or cleats 4 4, this being accomplished by sliding the lower edge of the chimney over the lug or cleat 5, and then by moving the resilient member 6 outwardly the chimney can be seated upon the burner, at which time, by releasing the resilient member 6 it will engage the peripheral flange 9, the handle or grip portion of the resilient member resting upon the top of the flange 9 and against the side of the chimney.
It will be observed that my improved fastener has a three-point bearing upon the lower edge of the chimney, and as these points engage the greater half of the lower ed e of the chimney it will beimpossible for the dhimney to tilt or become disenga ed from the lamp should the same be sudc enly moved. It will also be seen that it is an extremely easy matter to remove the chimney from the burner in case the wick of the lamp needs attention or it is desired to light the lamp.
It is obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
formed with an inVersely-arc sh'aped portion corresponding in curvature to the periphery of the base of a chimney, and said loop being 15 adapted to bear against the chimney and maintain the same in engagement with the first-named lugs.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN STEWART. Witnesses:
