TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PKENTICE, of the city and county ofProvidence, and State ofRhode Island, have invented a. new and improved Metallic Eyelet, and composition for making the some; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Heretofore, these articles have b oen' made of copper, or copper alloyed with tin or zinc, and afterwards silvered bydip'ping-in a solution of that metal, to give them arwhite aud fiuished appearance, and prevent them from tarnishing in use.
The object in view in my invention is the production of an eyelet from a composition of metal, that may be more eaiiily and expeditiously worked into form by any machinery capable of making'metallie eyelets, and
that from the nature of the composition will be delivered from the machine having the samo'silvered appearance as the ordinary eyelet, and, consequently will require no dipping or other operation of the kind, and besides this, will always remain bright, without turning red or yellow, as is the case when the silvering wears ofl" and exposes the copper or brass in the ordinary eyelet, and will therefore be better adapted for insertion in articles of clothing, and generally for other purposes, than the ordinary metallic eyelets.
My invention consists of an eyelet made from a'metallic composition of tin and certain other ingredients as herein set forth.
The composition, which I have employed with success, is made up of the following ingredients:
Tin, two parts, by weight.
Antimony, one and a half part, by weight.
Arsenic, one part, by weight.
Melt in a crucible, and stir thoroughly together, and mould into the form of ingots, after which the ingot is rolled-into the thickness required, and when stripped up is ready for use.
From these proportions of the several ingredients I have thus far obtained the best results as to the smoothness and ease of working the composition into eyelets, as well as to their brightness of color and polish when delivered from the machine, and the entire avoidance of splitting, like all other eyelets, in inserting them,-i'n the Way of their use, in-diii'erent fabrics. But I wish it to be understood that the proportion of the several ingredients may be varied'to some extent withoutv injuriously affecting the desirable qualities of the material for the purpose for which it is designed; and that I claim the said metals under a different proportional com.- bination, as well as that above particnlarly'speciticd.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The article of an eyelet, of the composition of material herein set forth, as a new manufacture.
GEO. W. PRENTICE. Witnesses Issac A. Bsowwstn Joan PRENTIOE.
