1o ,ZZ `wiz/oni, it magi/concern:
Be it known that I, '1 `iioMAs H. Si'iunge-I TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have vinvented certain new and usefull Improvements in Covers for JournalfBoxes, 4of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in covers for j ournal-boxes, and has for its object to provide airiinprovcd forni' of hinged lid which when closed will Contact withand seat all the way around the face of the box-o en-` joint on the box, and Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional elevation of the cover and a portion of the box.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the outer end o the journalbox, which is provided. with a faced-'ofi' surface or seat 2, which extends entirely around the box at the outer end and against which the lid seats. At the up )er edge and in the centerthe box is provi ed w-itli a tubular hinge member 3, which is stationa 'irovided with a flat surface 4112i; be resently described.
he lid 5, as shown in Figf2, has an outr ai-'purpose to ward arch in the vertical direction and is provided at the upper edge with tubular hingeeyes 6, which project on opposite sides of the tubular member 3 on the box, and said hingeeyes are provided on opposite edges with ribs 7. A pin 8 passes through the tubular hinge 3 and eye members 6 to vhohl the lid in .place on the box'.` On the outerface and adjacentl the upper edge thc lid is provided with a rib 9, which is provided with a slot 10, and this slotted rib has position directl vbeneath the fiat iace 4. Below the rib 9 tl e lid has another rib 11, which is also provided with a slot 12, and below said slot a centrally-locatedhorizontal groove 13y is also provided in the 12 and the groove '13, all of which are inthe fdownwar and d irt to the position ina central line extending vbelow the fiat face 4 on the hinge Specification ofl Letters Patent.

or without opening, and its inner s ace-fis arched concave in the vertical direction and edges ofthe boxsopening. rThe two side 1 resented mcna'isoei member 3 of the box. 'The iid is im 5 entrate edges of this are fiush withthe outer edges of the :box-opening. .0n its outer surface the lid is a lprojecting' edge fiange provided with direct y over the said atface 14 atth'e inner surface. .This outer edge flange is continuous around Vthe four edges yandcorners of the lid and: serves to prevent the lid from being bent or 'distorted at said edges`- A fiat spnngil has-, ahook` 16 formed on its lower end, W
' turns inwardly and projects into the groove i rim-face 14 of the cover will be and which is l 2 around" the box-opening., An i 4of said spring presses against the iiat the box openin 13, formed in the lid, and said spring extends upw rdly from said groove and passes through 'the s ot 12in the lower rib 11 and also through the slot 1 0 in theupper rib 9, and theupper end the hinge member 3 of the box. Itis obvious that by means,of this spring 15 the inner flat pressed firmly against the faced-off surface or and thus maintain tight joint and exclu 'e the dust and dirt.
The eye members 6 ofthe hinge, which are integral with the lid, have animproved com struction consisting of a central cyli'ndric` part in which the metaliis light or thin and this part is provided with two sides ri s or flanges 7, which are also relatively thin. This construction of eye membery obviates the liability to distortion of the position of .the eye member in castin the lid, and incase distortion has occurre this construction 'enables the same to be easily remedied' by blows from a hammer, which will dent orblend the parts of the eye membenand therebyslightly shift its position relative to the lid and, enable the lid to betted on the box so thati'the lidace 4 onV seat 2 around face 14 will accurately contact witlijthe seat ression 18 is also provided on the i ace of the lid belowthe groove I3, elslt p art of said incline being coincident with t e edged tool to be inserted in the 1 oove beneath the hook 16 onthe spring, w ereby the rool ottom offs`aid groove, Whichexiables an latter may be raised and held out of the groove while driving the spring downward to remove 1t from :the hd.
Having thus described my invention, what 5 I claim as new, and desirevto secure by Letters Patent, is-
A journal-box for railway-cars having o hinged lid which is provided on its outer surface with horizontal Vribs having slots, a
o roove, 13, formed in the lid and un inclined epression, 18, also formed in the lid adjacent said oo ve-jthe deepest part of said depres sion ending lnto said groov :md being coini cident with the bottom thereof; und a 'flat THOMAS H. SYMINGTON.
