This invention relates to a marking device which is more particularly desi ned for use` Y -on umbrellas, canesnvhips, p enc1 s, fountainpens, fishing-rods, and similar articles for ldentifying the same and enabling the owner p which is ve to recover the same when lost.-

The'object of this invention is the production of a marking device of this 'character simple and inexpensive inconstruction, W 'ch- 1s sightly and -does not detract from the a pearance of the article to which it is applie and which is vso constructed that the same can be readily applied to or f removed from the article.

In its simplest form the marking device consists of an inscriptionsheet. B, which is intended-.to bear the name and address of the owner ofthe 'umbrella and other information and which is adapted Yto be held on the rod of 'the umbrella by a holdingr or retaining device of suitable construction.4

The inscri tion-sheet may be constructed of any suitallile pliable or flexible materialsuch as pa er, cloth, or berloid; but I prefer to use s eet-Celluloidl havingl a rough front or innerside and a smooth outer or rear side.

An inscription-sheet of this character permits of readily'writin thename,` address, 'and' other information y means of a pencil on the front rough or inner side of the sheet and also enables the sheetwhen wrapped with this side around the rod of the umbrella .to` tightly grip the same, while the .outer smooth side permits of convenientlyl applying the holding device thereto and removing the same therefrom. r:

The width of the inscription-sheet should eater and is preferably slightly less than t e length of the cover and holder, so that the sheet does'not project beyond the ends of these arts and is more reliably protected from t e weather.

Y cover are also preferably constructed of sheetbrass or similar material which is non-rustable, thereby insuring long life and a neat appearance ,of the markmg device.

In lorder to direct the attention of the finder ofthe umbrella'or other article bearing the marking device to the fact that an address is contained on the sheet within the inclosure thereof, one of the inclosing parts, preferably the cover, is provided on lts outer side wit the words Address inside or similar statement. Persons finding the lost umbrella can readily determine the owner -of' the same by pulling off the cover and holder successively or exposing the sheet, this being possible without any tools for this purpose. A

This would not be possible if the slots ofthe holder and cover were of the same width, because the longitudinal edges of these two parts would be apt to engage with each which positively interlock these arts.

In order to guard against all possibility of accidental se aration of the cover and holder, it is desirable to supplement the frictioncoupling between these parts with -means For thispurpose -the cover and hol er are provided with parts which are adapted to be in- .terlocked, a suitable form of such interlocking means bein shown in Figs. 7 and 8 and constructed as ollows: e represents external ears or lugs which are stamped out of the `holder on opposite sides thereof and project with their free ends in a direction away from the longitudinal edge of the holder. When the parts are in this position, the hooks of the mscription-s eet, the hooks of the cover will interlock with the lu of the holder, as shown Fig. 8, there y securely fastening these` parts together and preventing accidentaldisenga ement thereof by any side pressure ap hed thereto.

.If desire the cover may be connectedA with the holder by forming a hook g-on one side thereof and engaging the same with a hook h on the corresponding vside of the holder, while the outer side ofthe cover may be s rung over the corresponding side of the holdler and provided with a finger-piece i for `convenience in separating the cover from the holder, such a structure being shown in Fig. 9.

rtlhis improved marking device can be produced at very low cost. The same has no pronounced projections which are liable to catch on other parts, and the same can be attached to the sticks or rods of umbrellas after the handles have been applied thereto, thus enabling the same to be readily shifted from an old or worn-out umbrella to a new one, if desired.
