BOX-TOP-ISECURING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 13, 1906.
Application filed April 3, 1905. Serial No. 253,682.
To all whom, it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, ARTHUR BEAU'DRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manistique, in the county of Schoolcraft and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Top-SecuringDevices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements'in box-top-securing devices.
The object of the invention is to provide a a box having secret means for securing the top of the same in place.
Afurther object 1s to provlde a securing device of this character which may be simpleand durable in construction, efficient in oper ation, and which will securely hold the top of the box in place until brought to a proper position for releasing the'same, which is accomplished by the simple manipulation of the box and without the use of a ey or other operating devices.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanyin a perspective view of a cordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes'a box, which may. be of any suitable shape and adapted to be used for any suitable purpose, said box being here shown as of oblong shape and adapted for use as a scholars pen and pencil box. On the box 1 is arranged a cover 2, in one endof which is formed a rectangular aperture 3. On the end of the cover or top 2 is formed a longitudinally-proj ecting ton ue '4.
On the end of the doox '1 adjacent to the tongued end of the cover is secured a narrow board or plate 5, which is adapted to cover this end of the box for a slight distance.- On the inner edge of the plate or board 5 is formed an undercut recess or rabbet 6, with which when the top 2 is in place is adapted to drawings, Figure 1 is engage the tongue 4, thereby securing this end of the top in place.
ox constructed in ac- On the opposite end of the box is formed an upwardly-projecting headed pin or stud 7, which extends through the aperture 3 and through the apertured end of an index-finger 8, arranged on the top or' cover 2 and is pivotally connected thereto by means of said headed pin 7. Onthe inner side of the pivoted end of the finger 8 is formed a rectangular recess 9, which corresponds 1n size and shape to the aperture 3 in which when the index-finger is adjusted to the proper position will aline or coincide with said aperture. On the pin 7 is slidably mounted a rectangular block 10, the thickness of which is somewhat less than the thickness of the top or cover 2 and also less than the depth of the recess 9 in the finger S. When the cover or top 2 is in a closed position upon the boxl, the block 10 is adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the end of the box within the apertureS of'said top, thereby preventing thelatter from being moved to withdraw the tongue 4 from the rabbet 6, which, together with the index-finger 8, will securely hold the top or cover upon the box.
In order to open the box, it is first necessary to block 10 to fall through the aperture 3 in the top and to drop into the recess 9 in the finger 8. The top 2 may now be shifted upon the pin 7 sufficiently to disengage the tongue 4 from the rabbet 6, after which the top may be swung in either direction upon said pin, thereby opening the box to the desired extent. After the top has been shifted to release the tongue 4 from the rabbet 6 and said top moved laterally to a slight degree the aperture in said top will be brought out of alinethe top 2 and invert the same, which will cause the I ment with the recess in the index-finger 8,
which will prevent the block 10 from dropping back into the aperture in the top, after which the box may be again turned to an upright position before the top is swung open.
It will be understood that before the box is inverted to cause the block 10 to drop into the recess in the index-finger it will be necessary to adjust said finger to the proper position for bringing the recess in the same into perfect alinement with the aperture in the top, and in order that it may be known when said recess and aperture are in such alinernent a scale is provided upon the upper side of the top of the box, with which the finger 8 is adapted to coact. The position of the finger may be such that when the same is in alinement with the aperture in the top the opposite end of the finger may point to any number of said scale, this arrangement being determined when constructing the device. The recess 9 in the finger 8 is shown in the present instance in such position in said finger that when the same is adjusted to the point midway between the edges of the top of the box or opposite the central division of the scale said recess will be in alinement with the aperture in the top, in which position of the parts the box may be opened.
In a box constructed as herein shown and described it will be seen that unless the combination is understood considerable difiiculty will be experienced when opening the same, thus providing a secure and reliable fastening means for the box, which may be opened or released without the use of a key.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described box and a cover therefor comprising a box having an undercut or rabbeted board 5 secured to one end of its upper side, a pivoted cover 2 having a rabbeted end to fit the rabbet on the end board 5, anaperture 3 in the opposite end of the cover 2, a pin 7 forming a pivot for said cover,afinger8pivoted uponsaid )in and novided with a recess 9 therein an a bloc 10 of less thickness than the cover or finger placed in the recess in said cover and finger, and adapted to slide upon the pin 7, and a scale on the box adjacent to the point of the finger, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ARTHUR BEAUDRY.
