CHECK PERFORATING AND INDICATING APPARATUS,
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 7125 may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT MARSH, theatrical manager, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 150 Oxford street, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Check Perforating and Indicating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for use in perforating or stamping various articles such as tickets, checks, invoices, receipts, or the likeand for indicating or registering each complete operation of the apparatus, the ob'ects of the present invention being to simpli the construction of the apparatus and to render the operation thereof more certain and expeditious.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, I will describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation and partial section of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig.
' 3 is a section taken along the line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detached view of the spring contact-arm pertaining to the rotatable head or turret.
According to the construction illustrated, the improved apparatus comprises a body or casting a, in which is arranged a plunger 6, adapted to carry punches or perforating-pins c, which work through a guide-plate c and a cutting-plate 0 both carried by the body or casting a. The plunger 6 is maintained in its inoperative position by means of a suit ably-arranged spring I), the upper end of the plunger and the spring being housed in a nonrotatable socket 12 attached to the body a. The socket b is flanged or so formed at its upper end as to retain the head or turret e on the body or casting a, a transverse key or pin 6 holding the said socket against rotation. The plunger b is operated downwardly b means of acam (1, formed at the extremity o' a lever d, the latter being pivoted, as at d in a recess formed in a rotatable head or turret e. The lever d in the rear of the pivot (Z is cam-shaped or so formed, as at d, as to lock the lever when the latter is raised, while permitting of its free downward movement, the said cam d when the lever is raised jamming against the side of the recess in the rotatable head or turret. The lever (1 may be formed or provided with a projection or nose (i adapted when the lever is rotated about the center of the head or turret to engage in one of a series of notches f, formed in a segment or semiring 7, secured to the aforesaid body or casting a. The head or turret e is marked, preferably on its side, with indications of the various denominations, prices, tickets, or other desired markings, the number of the markings corresponding with the number of notches in the aforesaid segment. The segment or semiring serves as a marker and as a stop to prevent the complete rotation of the head or turret, a holder 6 coming into contact with the one or the other end of the segment on arriving at the end of its angular movement in the one or the other direction. The head or turret e carries a contactarm e, which maybe provided with a roller or antifriction device 6 adapted to work over the I contacts a, which are mounted on vulcanite or other non-conducting material g, the con tacts corresponding to the markings on the head or turret e and to the number of notches in the segment or semiringf.
In order that the lever d and the head or turret 6 may register accurately with the notch f in the ring f, according to the denomination or value of the ticket or the like in respect of which the perforation and indication are required, the body or casting a may be formed with a slot or hole a into which is fitted a spring-pressed bolt or pin a the forward end of which bolt is adapted to enter recesses 6 formed in the under side of the rotatable head or turret e. The contact arm 6 is preferably under the control of a spring 6 or equivalent device and is pivoted in a holder 6 carried by the turret e, the operative part of the said contact-maker (2 entering by way of the slot a a shield or cover a, which extends over the several contacts a. The said contacts are severally connected by wiring (L with the indicator, which may be of any preferred type. In order to eifect the indication of the perforating operation, the plate 0 which carries the perforating-pins 0, may be provided with an arm h, to which one end of a pivoted leveri may be attached, the other end of the said lever carrying a pivoted trip-piece i, adapted when the lever is moved in one direction to operate a contact maker is, but when the lever is moved in the contrary direction to pass the said contact and leave it inoperative, the said pivoted piece i and the contact-maker it being so arranged as to establish a contact during the perforating operation. This constitutes what I term a fly-away contact and may be effected by means of a pivoted piece i on the aforesaid pivoted lever i, the said piece i being retained in normal position by means of a weak spring 11 The contactmaker may comprise a roller is, carried by a pivoted L-shaped piece 76 and adapted to make contact with a yielding contact k, formed of a bow of spring metal having a free end 75 and forming part of or connected with the terminal Z, a relatively strong spring is maintaining the carrier 76 and its contactmaker is normally away from the yielding contact is is". A pin or projection 7c on the L-shaped piece 16" is arranged in position for engagement by the nose of the pivoted or trip piece i, while another pin or projection i on the pivoted lever'i is arranged in position for engaging the tail of the trip-piece t. The pivoted lever 71 and the L-shaped piece is are carried by a plate m and, together with the perforating mechanism, are included in the circuit of a battery, the wire Z from the terminal Z being taken to the indicator.
The flyaway contact device may be inclosed in a base or box, such as n, conveniently situated in relation to the perforating apparatus.
When it is desired to perforate, the operating handle 01' lever d is moved, together with the head or turret 6, until the desired mark on the turret is indicated by the extremity f X of the segment or semiring f and the projection d on the lever d is alined with or over the notch f in the segment or semiring corresponding with the denomination to be indicated. The lever d is then depressed, so as to perform the operation of perforating. During this operation the arm h, pertaining to the perforator-plate e is carried down, owing to its connection with the said plate 0*, and deflects the lever i, the pivoted or trip piece i being turned about its pivot by contacting with the pin or projection 75 and caused to pass the said pin or projection is on the L-shaped piece 15 the weak spring 0? permitting such movement. The pivoted lever i upon the release of the lever d resumes its normal position and causes the trippiece i to strike the pin or projection k on the L-shaped piece If, and the said trip-piece being now held rigidly by the pin or projection i on the leveri turns the L-shaped piece k about its pivot and against the resistance of the relatively strong spring k with the result that so soon as the trip-piece i escapes from the pin k on the said L-shaped piece k a fly-away contact is effected and the operation of perforating indicatedthat is to say,
during the deflection of the piece k which latter is instantaneously released upon the trip-piece becoming free of the pin is.
It will be seen that as the indication is only effected upon the perforators or punches commencing their receding movement it is impossible to perforate without effecting an indication.
To prevent unauthorized use of the apparatus, the body or casting a may be provided with a hinged arm a*, having aforked extremity a adapted to engage the nose or proj ection d on the lever d when the latter is in the mid-position, as shown, the hinged arm being slotted, as at a, for the passage of a staple (L to which a padlock or the like may be applied. The central portion f of the segment or semiring f prevents the depression of the lever d in the said position.
What I claim, 'and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In an apparatus for perforating or stamping, a rotatable turret, having a contact member, a lever carried by said turret, a punch actuated by said lever and means adapted on the operation of the punch, to close an electric circuit.
2. In an apparatus for perforating or stamping, a plunger having punches, a rotatable head having an operating-lever in operative relation to the plunger, and means operated by the plunger and the head for completing a circuit.
3. I11 apparatus for perforating or stamping, a plunger having punches a rotatable head or turret adapted to carry the operating-lever and hold the same in operative rela tion to the plunger pertaining to the punches and a fly-away contact device comprising a lever, a pivoted or trip piece thereon adapted during the operation of the punches to turn the contact-maker about its pivot and complete an electric circuit.
4. In apparatus for perforating or stamping, a rotatable head or turret, a notched segment about said head, a lever pivoted in the head, a plunger having punches a nose or projection on said lever, a cam on the lever in operative relation to the plunger ertaining to the punches, a lever connected with the plunger, a pivoted or trip piece on said lever, a contact-maker in operative relation to said trip-piece and springs for controlling the said trip-piece and the contact-maker.
5. In an apparatus for perforating or stamping, a rotatable turret, a segmental notched ring about said turret, a plunger having punches, a lever pivoted in the turret adapted to engage with one of the notches in said ring, and in operative connection with the plunger, a contact member carried by the turret, and means cooperative with the plunger for completing an electric circuit, said notches in said ring forming stops for the the contact-maker establishes the circuit 1 pivotal lever.

6. In an apparatus of the class described, a shiftable contact-arm, a holder therefor, a spring for controlling said arm, a punching member, means cooperative with the latter to complete an electric circuit, and a lever carried b the holder for operating the punching mem er.
7. In an apparatus for perforating or stamping, a rotatable turret having a contact-arm, a lever carried by said turret, a punch actuated by said lever, and means controlled by the movement of the punch to complete an electric circuit.
8. In an apparatus for perforating or stamping, a plunger having punches, a flyaway contact comprising a lever, a pivoted trip-piece on said lever, a spring for control ling said trip-piece, a pin on said lever for holding the trip-piece, a contact-maker, a pin on the contact-maker adapted to be engaged by the trip-piece and a spring for controlling the said contact-maker.
9. In apparatus for perforating or stamping, the combination, of a lever, a pivoted trip-piece on said lever, a spring for control ling said trip-piece, a pin on said lever for holding the trip-piece, a pivoted contactmaker, a roller on said contact-maker, a
spring for controlling the said contact-maker.
10. In an apparatus of the class described, a rotatable turret, a plunger having punches, means inde endently operated by the latter and the sai turret for completing an electric circuit, and a lever carried by said turret for operating the punches.
11. In an apparatus of the class described, a rotatable turret having a lever and a con tactarm, a plunger having a punch actuated by the lever, and means controlled by the movement of the plunger for completing an electric circuit.
12. In an apparatus of the class described, a movablesection having a lever, a contactarm carried by said movable section, a punching device actuated by the lever and a con tact-making device actuated by the punching device for completing an electric circuit.
