REGISTERING TICKET PUNCH.
Application filed. filctober 14, 1921. J Serial No. 507,695.
T all who m it may concem Be it known that we, FRANK MATHEWS and STANLEY DRUMMOND BLACK, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing, respectively, at 50 Compton Road, Croydon, Sun rey, England, and 56 Tabernacle Street, London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Registering Ticket Punches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to registering ticket punches used by conductors on street passenger vehicles for checkingthe issue of tickets, of the kind in which a bell is sounded and in which the complete reciprocations of the ticket punch are controlled through the medium of a double rack and a double armed rocking pawl engaging therewith, the object of the invention being to improve and simplify the construction, and to render the instrument more reliable and less subject to breakdown through wear of working parts than heretofore.
According to our invention the main operating spring which also functions for operating the gong hammer. is locatedswithin a slot in the main slide which is in the form of a link pivotedto the head slide and directly or indirectly to the operating lever.
In a suitable arrangement for carrying out the invention the main slide is slotted l0ngitudinally and the main spring is arranged within this slot, one end of the spring bearing against one end of the slot whilst the otherrend of the spring bears against one side of a plunger or block slidable within the slotand the opposite side of which block is fiat and bears against a fiat face on the boss of the gong hammer. This boss passes through the slot in the main slide and is pivoted to the'base of the ticket punch. To
the main slide is pivoted the double-armed rocking pawl, whilst the double rack for engagement therewith is pivoted to the base, of the punch and connected to the said pawl by a spiral spring, the said double rack being capable of a rocking movement on its pivot and which motion is limited by a pin engaging a slot. The gong hammeris actuo ated by a projection on the double armed rocking pawl engaging and riding past a projection on the said hammer.
In the accompanying drawing- 7 Figure 1 is a front elevation of part of a registering ticket punch illustrating the improvements.
. Flglll'6 2 is an elevation at rightangles to F gure l.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section on the line. I I

Figure 4 is a similar view to Figure 1 showing another position of the parts.
a is the base or main plate upon which all the mechanism of the punch is mounted/b the head in which slides the punch proper 0 carried upon the headslide (Z. 6 is the op erating lever for the punch, whichlever carries'the thumb-piece f and g is the bell or gong indicated by the dotted lines. All the foregoing parts are of usual construction. I y
We will now describe the improvements. It is the main-slide whichis in the form of a link connecting the head-slide cl with the operating lever e by means of the'pivot pins As clearly indicated in Figure l, the link it and lever e are so relatively positioned as to impart a minimum lateral movement to,
the said link during the reciprocations of the punch c. The main slide it is provided longitudinally with a slot j, a pin is secured to the base-plate a projecting through the lower end of the said slot'and having pivoted thereon the hammer Z for striking the gong 92 In the upper part of the slot j is arranged the main actuating'spring m of spiral form, one end of which bears against the upper end of the said slot, preferably through the medium of a plate 12 having a downwardly extending pin 0 to receive the spring. The other or lower end of "the spring bears against a plunger or block 29 the lower face 9 of which is flat and the upper part of which consists of a pin which extends into a longitudinal recess in the pin 0, and telescopes within the pin 0. The face 9 of the plunger bears against a fiatface r on the boss of the hammer Z andholds it in the position indicated clearly in Figure-l by the thefiill operations ofthe lever in opposite directions, 1 the tooth 25 of the pawl= being held in engagement with the rack' teeth a during the downward movement of the main slide'jhiibya relatively weak spring 25 attached at one end to the rack u. The pawl "has a nose or projection which presses back the hammer Z by contact with a projec tion Z thereon, during such downward movement, and releases "it to-st'rike th'e gong '9 by iding. ov r,
the said projection Z. just before reaching the limit of such movement; Figureflindicates the position of the parts when reachmw the limit of the said downward movement.
