Description
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
f ROBERT W. HARDIE,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BARREL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentea Marche, 1906.
Application fiiea Jm 17, 1905. serial NO. 265.892.
ceptacle securely together by an air and liquid tight joint, to protect said joint from injury, and to enable the. rec'eptacle to be rolled on its side withoutinjury to the Shell. These objects I accomplish by the means illustrated j in the accompanying drawmgs, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention applied to a metal barrel. Fig. -2 1S a vertical cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a section of the`ends of two Sections of a barrel with flanges formed thereon. Fig. 4 is a section of a joint partially formed. Fig. 5 is a section of a modification of my invention.
As illustra-ted in the drawings, the Shell of -the barrel is composed of a central section A and end Sections B, preferably having a head C formed integral itherewith. In the construction preferred by me the ends of lthe central section of theshell are each turned outward from the Shell; forming on each end of said section a flange a, and the adjacent '.ends of the end Sections are also turned out- 'the central section.
Ward to form a corresponding flange b adapted to be arr'anged adjacent to the fla' gesfof These fianged ,ends of the central and end Sections are then referably turned over and interlocked, t ereby forming a tight joint projecting outward from` the Shell of the barrel. An annular hoop D, having a bendable flange d, is then placed over the .outwa'rdly-extending 'joint of the barre'l-'With the inner wall of the hoop bearing the joint absolutely air and liquid tight. Thev hoop' not only strengthensthe joint and prov against one sideof the joint. The flange d of ,the hoop is then pressedor .rolled inward firmlyagainst the opposite Side of the joint, so
as toexert direct pressure on -and clamp the edges of saidfianges firmly together and make tects the joint from injry Whilethe barrel is in use, 'but it serves, moreover, as a rolling hoop on which the Shell l the ground and rolled, thereby protecting the Shell from injury. While the hoop protects the joint from injury, the joint by extending securing the hoop to the Shell.
The main or body portion of the hoops D is made sufficiently heavy to support the weight of the barrel and its contents, while the flange d'is mreferably made lighter in structure thanthe vbody of the hoop, and thereby adapted to be bent over' onto the flanges of the Sections and clamp them body of the hoop.
I do not desire to be limited to.. the construction of joint and hoop'already described,
interlo'ckin'g the flanged ends .of two Sections of a Shell together and then binding an outer hoop around Said joint. In' some instances two ad'acent Sections together by means of such a oop, so that the hoop unites lwith the When so used, vthe shown in Fig. 5.
'What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Ina barrel, the combination of .two cylindrica'l Sections having their adjacent ends provided with interlocking outwardly-extending flanges, and an annular hoop vided With a bendable flange adapted to against and clamp the edges of said flanges together, `substantially 'Scribed.
2.- In a barrel, the combination of two cylindrical Sections having their adjacent ends provided With outwardl -extendng crimped flanges, and. anannular fioop provided with a bendable flangeadapted to bear against and stantially as shown-and described In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. j' .'j i ROBERT W. HARDIE. .Witnessesz WILL'IAM`u F. QU1GLEY.,- HENRY P. PERRIN.
in which a completejointis first formed by I propose to clamp' the edges of the flanges of I '75 flanged ends of the-Sections to make a .jointj flanged ends of the sec-` tidns may be crimped together, if' desired, as.
lpro- 7 car as shown and d'eclamp the edges of said flanges together, submay be raised from- I outward from the Shell serves as means for tightly and securely against'the wall or main
