Description

PATENTED PEB. 27, 1906.
AI GIBSLER. TURBINE WATER WHEEL CNSTRUGTION.
APPLIGATION FILSD MAX 31, 1905.
SNA
UNITED S'IATES PATENT OFFICE,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27', 1906.
Application filed May 31,1905. Serial No. 263.076.
To a/Z whom it may concern@ Be it known that I, ARTHUR Giiisiinn, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turbineater-VVheel Constructions; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accoinpanyin drawing, and to the letters of reference mar ed thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in turbine water-wheels of the horizontal type, either sin le or duplex.
HeretoIore in designing water-wheels it has been the custom to locate on the inside of the Hume or housin the dome-cylinder, which is the part of t ie water-wheel system that excludes the water from the gate and the upper part of the wheel. This manner of locatin the dome-cylinder has disadvantages that are well known to those familiar with the construction and installation of water-wheel systems. For example, a Hume or housing having the dome-cylinder located on the inside must necessarily be of a length correspondin to the length of the dome-cylinder, inclu ing the crown-plate, and according to the number of domes employed. In other words, when the dome-cylinder is' located on the inside of the Hume or wheel-housing the latter must necessarily be much longer than in the present case, owing to the necessity of providing s ace on the interior of the fiume or housing or the location of said dome-cylinder. In the present case the flume or Wheel-housin need not be lengthened on account of the orne or domes, and, further, a more compact construction is obtainable by placing the dome or domes on the outside of the wheel-casing, as will hereinafter appear.
The present invention also obviates other disadvantages heretofore existin in waterwheel construction not particu arly inentioned above.
To the foregoing ends the present invention consists in a construction and design which enables the dome cylinder or cylinders to be located on the outside of the flume or wheel-housing, where is enabled a convenient access to the water-Wheel or runner and the gate with the least possible disarrangenient of the parts, and, further, by thus locating the dome cylinder or cylinders on the outside of the wheel-housing tlie cost of construction is very materially lessened.
Preceding a detail description of theinvention reference is made to the accompanying drawing, which is a vertical longitudinal section of water-wheel mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention.
In a detail description of the invention simi lar reference characters indicate corresponding arts.
T e drawing illustrates a duplex waterwheel system in which the water-wheels or runners A are located upon a single shaft A', provided with suitable bearings.
B designates a doinecylinder, of which in the present instance there is one located at each end of the flume or wheel-housing C and which are rigidly secured on the outside of said ends. Secured to each of the dome-cyl- Yinders is a crown-plate D, which supports end bearings E for the wheel-shaft.
F designates a water-wheel gate within chute-case G, the latter being fixed to the interior of the water-wheel housin as heretofore. The lower portion of sai chute-case has an outward horizontal extension G, that reaches into the lower portion of the domecylinder B and supports the gate in a correct position and prevents said ate from tipping over when entirely open. his extension G is of a rounded or semicylindrical forni and, as before stated, is a continuation of the chute-case, being either cast integrally with the chute-case or boltedthereto. The ate, as shown in the drawing, is closed. l hen open, the extension G supports it in a true horizontal position.
The dome-cylinders are kept free from water by drain-pipe H, which discharges into the draft-tube I.
Having described my invention, I claiml. In a water-wheel system7 a chute-case conductin the water to the wheel, a gate within sai chute-case, and an extension on said chute-case reaching outwardly into .the dome-cylindera said extension being in aline- Inent with and adapted to receive the gate when opened.
2. In a water-wheel s stem, a flume, a water-wheel runner house within said iluine, a chute-case within said fiume, a gate within IOO In testimony whereof I all'x my signature seid chute-case, and a dome-cylinder com xn presence of two wltnesses.
nected directly to said flume 0n the outside thereof and into which the ate is adapted to f move, and means projects outwardly from ARUIUR (IIELILR the chute-ease into said dome for supporting Witnesses:
the gate when moving into the dome-cylin- R. J. MCCARTY,
der, substantially as specified. (l. M. T HEOBALD.
