To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. EMERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denison, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skiving-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to skiving-machines; and the object thereof is to provide a machine of such class particularly adapted to skive leather straps for making laps on harness and belting or for other purposes wherein it is found applicable.
The invention further aims to provide a skiving-machine for the purpose set forth by which the clamping of the article operated upon-is dispensed with and to so construct the machine that the operator can hold the article to be operated upon with one hand while the other hand is used to operate the machine.
The invention further aims to provide a machine of the class referred to with meansv whereby a smooth finish canbe obtained for that end of the article operated upon.
The invention further aims to provide a machine of the class referred to with means for regulating the len 'th of the lap to be cut and for also cutting a eather-edge, if desired.
The invention further aims to construct a skiving-machine Whichshall be simple in its construction, strong, efficient in its use, durable, easily operated, and comparatively inex pensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing andother objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention; but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 and 2 denote a pair of vertically-extending side plates, terminating at their bottoms in laterally-extending apertured ears 3, through which holdfast devices 4 extend for connecting the plates with a suit able support, or, as shown, with a base 5, which is secured in position through the medium of the holdfast devices 6 to any suitable supportfor example, a bench or table. The plate 1 at its top is provided with an outwardly-extending lateral flange 7, which is of a length substantially equal to the length of its plate, and the plate 2 at its top is provided With an outwardly-extending lateral flange 8, which is of a length substantially equal to the length of its plate. Approximately centrally of the plates 1 2,'at the bottom thereof, abrace member 9 is provided, which is adapted to stay the plates a suitable distance apart. Said brace member 9 is interposed between the plates 1 2 and is retained in position through the medium of a rod 10, which extends through the plates 1 2, as well as said brace member, projects laterally from each of the plates 1 2, has the projecting ends thereof screw-threaded, and has mounted upon said screw-threaded ends the nuts 11 which bear against the outer face of the side plates, and which are adapted to fixedly secure the brace member 9 in position. At the forward end of the plates 1 2, near the top thereof, a fiat brace member 12 is provided, which is interposed between the plates 1 2 and is provided with the extensions 13, projecting through the plates 1 2 and carrying clamping-nuts 14 for fixedly securing said brace member 12 to the plates. At the rear end of the plates 1 2, near the top thereof, a flat brace member 15 is provided, which is interposed between said plates and is provided with the extensions 16, projecting through the plates and carrying the clamping-nuts 17 for fixedly securing said member 15 to the plates. The brace member 12 is arranged above the plane of the brace member 15 for a purpose to be hereinafter referred to.
The reference character 18 denotes the material-supporting plate, which is interposed between the plates 1 2 near the top thereof, and is knurled or otherwise indented, as at 19, to prevent the slipping of the material operated upon in a manner as hereinafter referred to. The material-supporting plate 18 is supported between the plates 1 2 at an inclination through the medium of a pair of gage-screws 20, extending through the member 12, and a single gage-screw 21, extending through the member 15. The material-supporting plate 18 is normally held in engagement with the screws 20 21 through the medium of a pulling-spring 22, connected at its upper end to the lower face of the plate 18, as at 23, and at its lower end to the member 9.
Supported at each end and adapted to travel upon the flanges 7 8 is a longitudinally and transversely movable knife or cutter 24, having a projection 25 extending from each end thereof. The knife or cutter 24 is held upon the flanges 7 and 8 through the medium of the retaining-bar 26 and the combined retaining and guide bar 27. The bar 26 is mounted upon the blocks 28, arranged upon the ends of the flan e 7, and through said bar 26, block 28, and f ange 7 extend the holdfast devices 29 for securing the bar 26 to the flange 7, the block 28 retaining the bar 26 a sufficient distance above the flange 7 so as not to interfere with the travel of the cutter or knife 24. The combined retaining and guide bar 27 is mounted upon the blocks 30, arranged upon the ends of the flange 8, and the said blocks are of such height as to hold the bar 27 asuitable distance above the flange 8 so as not to interfere with the travel of the knife or cutter 24. Extending through the bar 27, block 30, and flange 8 are the holdfast devices 31 for connecting said bar 27 with the flange 8. The bar 27 is provided with a diagonally-extending slot 32 in which operates a guide-pin 33, carried by the cutter or knife 24, the function of the slot 32 being to cause the cutter to move transversely of the plate 18 during the longitudinal or reciprocating movement of the cutter or knife 24.
The longitudinal or reciprocating movement of the cutter is obtained through the medium of an oscillatory lever having a handle portion 34 and a yoke-shaped portion 35 straddling the plates 1 2. Each of the members of the yoke-shaped portion is provided with a vertically-extending slot 36, through which extends the projections 25. The lower ends of the members of the yoke-shaped portion are loosely mounted upon the pro jecting ends of the rod 10 and retained on said rod through the medium of the nuts 37.
' It will be evident from the construction of said slot 32, will move the cutter transversely during its operation by the lever.
At the forward end of the plate 18 is a stop to arrest the forward movement of the knife, and the said stop consists of a rigid member 38 and a flexible member 39, which is arranged below the member 38 and secured together through the medium of the holdfast devices 40. The member 38 is slotted, as at 41, and is adjustably connected to the plate 18 through the medium of the set-screw 42. By employing the set-screw 42 in connection with the slot 41 of the member 38 the stop can be adjusted to various positions, and by constructing the member 39 of flexible material it will permit the entrance of the knife, so that the article being operated upon will be cleanly out, thereby obtaining a smooth finish, as it will be evident that the knife will cut past the end of the material and enter into the member 39.
The gage-screws 20 are adapted to adjust the upper end of the plate 18 with respect to the plane in which the knife travels, so as to obtain a feather-edge for the material which is operated upon. The gagescrew 21 is adapted to adjust the plate 18 to and from the plane of the knife, so as to regulate the length of the lap to be out.
As the working plate 18 always extends at an inclination in a rearward direction, it is evident that the material to be operated upon can always be inserted between the knife and the said plate.
The manner in which the machine is operated is as follows: The lever is pulled back, so as to allow the material to go between the plate 18 of the machine and the knife, the material being then held firmly with the left hand and the lever pushed forward. As the 1 material engages the surface 19 when the lever 1S moved forward, sa1d surface prevents the.slipping of the material. After the material has been positioned in the manner as stated and the lever is moved forward the cutter or knife is carried therewith, which will enter the material, skiving it so as to form the lap.
By setting up the machine in the manner as shown it enables the dispensing with a separate clamp for holding the material during the skiving operation, as all that is necessary to do is to hold the material with one hand while moving the knife to skive with the other hand.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A skiving-machine comprising a reciprocatory and transversely-movable looselymounted knife, an angularly-adjustable material-supporting plate associating with said knife, and an oscillatory lever independent of and loosely engaging with said knife for operating it when the lever is oscillated.
2. A skiving-machine comprising a reciprocatory and transverselymovable knife having an upwardly-extending guide-pin, a pair of retaining-bars for the knife and between which the knife extends, one of said bars provided with a diagonally-extending slot in which said pin operates during the remy hand in presence of two subscribing Witciprooation of the knife, thereby imparting a nesses.
