BRA E-BEAM.
Specification of Letters 1atent.
, Patent ed. Feb. 27, 1906.
Application filed July 18,1905. Serial Nq. 270,].73. I
view on line 2 2, Fig.1. Fig. 3 is an end e1e-.
vational view of a modified'form. Fig.4 is a rear elevational view of the form shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a rear elevational viewof another modified form; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 6 6, Fig. 5..
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in brake-beams, the object being to enable the brake-heads to be readily and quickly removed in making re "airs with out necessitating the unhanging o the beam.
. or the disturbance of the integrity of the truss.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, allas will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out the claims.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the compression member of the brake-beam, and 2 the tension member.
3 indicates a thrust-block in which the end of the compression member is seated and through which the tension-rod passes, the latter havinga nut 4 on its endfor tightening the same and lacin a camber in the compression mem er. he front face of this thrust-block is preferably fiat, and its top and. bottom faces are shaped to receive flanges on the brake-head 5, as shown in Fig.
- 2. A tapered opening is formed in the forward portion of the thrust-block, through which passes a wedge-key. 6, said wedge-key passing through alining openings in. rearwardly-extending flanges on the brake-head.
The tendency of this wed e-key in service is to work down ir'rits seat, t us serving to hold the parts tight at all times. The top and bottom faces of the thrust-block are also inclined, so that any downward movement of' the wedge-key will tend to seat the brakehead more firmly on the thrustblock. 'A cotter-pin 7 is arranged in the lower end of the wedge-key for obvious reasons. When it is desired to'remove the brake-head, it is only necessary to remove the cotterin, drive out the wedge-key,-and remove the rake-head 5. In the form shown in Fi s. 3 and '4 the thrust-block is provided wit a recess in its front face to accommodate the brake-hanger 8. The top and bottom faces of the thrustblock in this modification are parallel, as are also the edges of the securing-key 6 3 onthe top and bottom faces of thethrustblock, around which extend'flanges from the brake-head. Through these projections and flanges on the brake-head extend wedge split keys or cotter-pins 6 there being two cotter.-
' pins to each head, said cotter-pins being hori In Figs. 5 and 6 Ihave shown projectionszontallydisposed in this form of my inven- .tion, whereas in the forms previously'described the securing dev ces are vert1cal ly disposed.
' -I am aware that niinor changes in the coin struction, arrangement, andcombination of the several parts of my beam may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least "de artingv from the nature and principle of myinvention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Fatent', is-
1. In a trussed brake-beam, the com ina tion with a thrust-block having a ta ered opening, of a removable brake-head providedwith registering openings, and a tapered wedge-key passing through said openings for securing said, removable brake-head in position; substantially as described.
2. In a trussed brake-beam, the combination with a thrust block having inclined faces, of a removable brake-head fitting upon sa'id thrust-block, and a securing device which tends to more firml seatthe brake-head in position; substantia 1y as described.
3. The herein-described thrust-block for brake-beams, the same having a tapered opening for the reception of a brake-head-securing key; substantially as described.
4. The herein-described thrust-block, the
