To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HARRY W. FRosT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fulcrums for Brake-Beams, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a topplan view, and Fig. 2 is a side elevational view.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in fulcrums for brake-beams, the object being to construct the fulcrum in such manner that the parts thereof may be separated, so that they may be easily inserted into or removed from position in the beam members.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the beam members ,which are shown as channels placed in vertical alinement with respect to each other, their flanges being presented inwardly and said members being spread apart at the center of the beam.
2 and 3 are the jaws of the fulcrum or brake- .lever support, which jaws are connected, re-
spectively, to head portions 4. Each head portion is provided with an inclined face whereby the two parts of the fulcrum may be brought together within the beam members, each head portion having lateral extensions on each side of the inclined portion, so as to provide a firm and solid connection between the parts. 6 indicates a single rivet which is designed to be passed through holes in the beam members and registering holes in the head portions of the jaws. The castings constituting the jaws and head portions may be cored out or lightened, as is well known, ribs or flanges being left to 've the required strength. By confining the ead portions between the flanges of the beam members, and thereby providing an extended area, it will be obvious that the securing-rivet 6 is subjected to little or no strain in service.
I am aware that minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. In a brake-beam, the combination with flanged beam members, of a two-part fulcrum, each part consisting of a jaw and a head, said head portion fitting within the flanges of the beam members, and provided with an overlapping portion for cooperating with its companion, and a rivet passing through said head portions and said beam members; substantially as described.
2. In a brake-beam, the combination with two channels whose flanges are presented inwardly, and a two-part fulcrum, each part comprising a aw and a head, the head of one fulcrum part fitting within the flanges of one of the beam members, and the head of the other fulcrum part fitting within the flanges of the other beam member, said heads being constructed so as to overlap each other, the overlapping portions being formed with registering openings, and a rivet passing through the beam members and registering openings in said head portions substantially as described.
