Description

No. 813.525. PATENTED FEB. 27, 1906, G. W. SIMMONS. GYGLOMETER ATTACHMENT FOR TYPE WRITING MACHINES.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 17,1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. SIMMONS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
Speiiiflcation of Letters Patent.
I Patented Tab. 27. 1906.
r Application filed July 17, 19; Serial No- 270.168.'
10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SIMMONS, a citizen of -the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cyclometer Attachments for Type-Writing Machines, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a cyclometer attachment for t pe-writing machines; and it" consists of t e novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an ordinary type-writing machine with a cyclometer for registering the number of times the carriage has been operated daily.
A further object of my invention is to keep record of work done by the stenographer.
Figure l is a perspective View of my invention shown in position and in connection with the escapement of a type-writing machine. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 3 indicates the frame of a type-writing machine, and 4 the rack which meshes with pinion 4.
5 indicates a cyclometer of ordinary and common construction which is attached to the frame 3 oi the type-writing machine bymeans of the bracket 6. The mechanism of the cyclometer is controlled by the shaft 7, upon which is mounted a ratchet-wheel 8 and a gear-wheel 9. To tl1e'gear-wheel 9 is pivotally connected a pawl 10, its tooth contacting with the teeth of the ratchet 8' and held in position by the spring 11 The ratchet-wheel 8 is rigidly connected to the shaft- 7, while the gear-wheel 9 is loosely mounted thereon and meshing with the gear wheel 12, rigidly mounted upon the escapement-shaft 13 of the typ wliter, heo )eration of my invention is follows: While the type-writer is being operated the escapement, during the manipulation of each key, has a step-by-step motion, which will o'perate the gear-wheel 12, which in turn operates the gear-wheel 9, and during this operation the pawl 10, moving with the gearwheel 9 in. the direction indicated by the arrow, allowing said pawl to slide over the ratchet-teeth without affecting or operating the cyclometer mechanism. When the carria e has reached its destination, the operator, rep acing the carriage to the starting-point, Wlll cause the gear-wheel l2 and 1?. to move in o posite directions, thereby allowing the pawl 10 to enga c with the ratchet-wheel 8 and revolve the si aft, which in turn operates the cyclometer mechanism, ad vancing it one number.-
I have shown my attachment as applied to a Remington t pe-writer of modern. style and construction; lint it is obvious that the device may be attached to dilierent styles and. constructions of type-writing machines.
I do not desire to limit myself to this precise method of attaching the cyclometer to the type-writing machine, it will he nec essary in applying the cyclometer to different makes of typewriters to add an additional gear-wheel. and a diil'erently construc ted support, whereby the cyclometer is attached to the machine.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and. secure by Letters hat-- ent is 1. A cy'elometer attachment for type a rite ing machines comprising a cyclometer; a bracket supporting the same on the frame of the type-writer; a shaft communicating with and operating the cyelometer mechanism an escapement mechanism of a type-writer, and means between the escapement mechanism and the cyclometer-shaft for operating the cyclometr, substantially as set forth.
2. In a cyclometer attachment for type writers, the combination of a cyclometer provided with a shaft arranged to be operated thereby, a gear-wheel loosely mounted thereon, the-escapement mechanism of the typewriter provided with a shaft and gear-wheel arranged to mesh with the loosely-mounted gear-wheel, and pawl-and-ratchet means between the loosel-mounted gear-wheel and the cyclometer-s iait, whereby the latter is operated when the escapement mechanism moves in one direction, but remains at rest when moved in the other direction.
3. A cyclometer attachment for type-writ mg machines comprising a cyclometer su1tably supported to the frame of the type writer; ashaft communicating with the mica 'nal mechanism of the cyclometer; a ratchetwheel rigidly mounted upon said shaft; a
gear-wheel looseiy mounted'upon said shaft In testimony whereof I have signed my an escapement mechanism of'a type-writer, name to this specification in presence of two 10 a shaft opgrgted lay the esoa enllent melglansubscribing witnesses. Lsrn row e wit a ear-w ee arran e to v mes with the loosel -mounted gearfvheel, GEORGE SIMMONS and a pawl connecte to the latter arranged Witnesses:
