Beitknown that we, WILLIAM A. Soom and WVILLIAM S. MoOALL, citizens of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Gadsden and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Rein-Guard, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to attachments to vehicles for preventing the driving-reins from becoming entangled with the swingletrees, and has for its object to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efficiency of devices of this character.

With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the referred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view, of a portion of a vehicle-tongue with the doubletree and swingletrees in position thereon and with the improved guard applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a side view; and Fig. 41 is a plan view, enlarged, of the improved guard detached.

The improved device consists of a rod of resilient material, such as steel, having eyes 11 '12 in the ends and bent into an upwardlyextending loop 13 at the center. The opposite ends of the rod 10 at points adjacent the eyes 11 and 12 are bent upwardly, as shown at 14 and 15, to properly space the guard from the swingletrees 18 and 19.

The eyes 11 12 are designed to engage the pivot-bolts 16 17, whereby the swingletrees 18 19 are coupled to the doubletree 20 with the rod extending over the doubletree and the tongue 21, to which the same is pivoted at 22.

The guard member when thus arranged effectually protects the swingletrees from entanglement with the driving-reins, while at the same time by reason of the upward bends at 14 15 the swingletrees are free to swing beneath the guard and without coming in con-' tact therewith.

The upwardly-bent central loop 13 enables the guard to be extended or contracted longitudinally to adapt the eyes 11 12 to doubletrees of different lengths, and thus adapt the guard device to all the varying sizes of vehicles.

The guards are simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured in different sizes, and will not detract from the appearance of the vehicle to which they are attached.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. The combination with a doubletree having spaced swingletrees pivoted thereto, of a rod provided with terminal eyes for engagement with the pivot-bolts of said swingletrees and having its central portion bent upwardly to form an open loop, whereby the rod may be adjusted longitudinally to correspond to varying lengths of doubletrees.

2. The combination with a doubletree having spaced swingletrees pivoted thereto, of a rod provided with terminal eyes for engagement with the pivot-bolts of said swingletrees and having its opposite ends at said eyes bent upwardly to space the intermediate portion of the rod from the swingletrees, said rod being provided with a centrally-disposed open loop whereby the rod may be adjusted longitudinally to correspond to varying lengths of doubletrees.

3. A rein-guard formed of a piece of flexible material having its opposite ends provided with terminal eyes and its intermediate portion bent upwardly at said eyes and provided with a centrally-disposed open loop.
