Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. m. 1.3, 190d Application filed February 16, 190l5- I Serial No. 245,895-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be-it known that I J 01m McLEAN, of New- .ark, in the county of Essex, in the State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful of which the following, com anying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact escription.
This invention relates to improvements in paper-clips asa new article of manufacture, and is particularlyv adapted for use as an advertising novelty. Y
My object is to provide a'paper-clip having u on one side a spring-tongue adapted to c asp a aper or papers, while its other side is a adapte to receive printedor other advertise 4 'marginal' edges of this in matter.
his invention comprises, essentially, a
metal (plate or disk having a portion thereof cut an bent into theiorm of a clasp ortongue and provided with a celluloid or equivalent. material which is adapted .to receive an emblem, rint, or. advertising matter.
In t e drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are pers ective views of my improved paper-clip s own as clasping the edges ofa series "of;
' papers, Fig. 1 showing a pair of tongueclasps and Fig. 2 showing a single springclasp. Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged sectional views of .t
spectively. I Fig, 5 is a perspective'view of tongue is formed.
- I proximity to the main outwardly; at
e paper-clip seen in Figs. 2 and 4. Fig. 6 is a sectiona 4,
view similar to Figs. 3 an showin a slightly-modified form of my clip in whic 1 the celluloid face is a plied directly to the metal, disk from whidh a. represents a circular metal disk having two tongues a, which are cut from the mam body of the disk a, leaving one end united to said main body while the other end is free to spring outwar y. Y
The central portion of arched or bent rearwardly, some distance from the main free end of each tongue normally body a'ndis curved 1. to enable the paper to be readily inserted between the tongue and adja-, cent face of the disk, or in some instances I may use a similar circular-disk a, having a single tongue a ,-a's shown in Fi 2 ,in which case the single tongu each tongue is so as to stand out body, while the e would'be ormed in the same manner as that described for the tongue seenin Fig. 1. 4
The dis a and its'tongues q, are n adev of e device seen in Figs. 1 and 2, re-
the springlies in close .the disk and adapted to claspthering metal, the ton ue being formed 'sk, and therefore 2'through the thin s from t e main body of the leaves one or more openings which may be employed.
In the structures seen in Figs. 1 to 5 ,inclusive, each metal'disk a and a is fitted with a cup-shape metal disk 4, having a marginal flange 6, of celluloid 01 disk-4 is applied afacin is adapted to rehown a simplified con- 'p consisting of acupmain body to form a spring-tongue 11, similar to the spring-tongues a. In thisinstance the celluloid disk, as 12, is a plied directly to the fiat face of the metal disk 10 and'itsmarginaled margina flange 13 of the disk 10, thereby docking the two disks 10 and 12 together.
It is evident that in the construction seen in Fig. 6'the 0 stamping out t e tongue 11 from the disk 10,
which-may be impinged between the tongue 11 and disk 10, which on account of the flexibility of the celluloid disk 12 would cause the troduce the metal disk 4:, (seen-inFigs. 1 to 5, inclusive,)' so as to protect the thin celluloid covering 6.
The mainfeature of my invention consists in providingfa circular disk with ,a springtongue which is stamped from a' portion of aperbetween the tongl'ue and main body 0 the disk. Although I; Lave described this device'as a paper-clip,;it is clearlye'vident that it may be which case. the sprin "clip or tongi'ie could mentand'clas e upon the fabrid surrounding the butt'o ole. 1
disk, according to the number of tongues 5, inclosing their respective'disks a and t a, and upo'n the outer face of the cup-shape,
thih spring metal .havmg a. portion thereof out, and pressed from the ening 14, which is formed by- This disk (Sis prefer-- on and within the flange 5 a or a, so that the' es are bent back upon and within a leaves the underlying parts of; the celluloid disk 12 exposed to contact with the paper latter to bulge outwardly, and I therefore inusedvas an advertising orcampaign button,
Having thus described my invention, what I clalm, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A'pa er-clip comprising a disk having a marginal ange. projecting from one side, and a tongue attached at one end to thedisk within said flange, portions of the tongue projecting beyond the flanged side of the disk.
2. A paper-clas comprising a circular disk having a margina flange projecting from one.
side anda tongue projecting from the same side Within the flange and free at the end.
3. A pa er-clasp comprisin a circular metal disk aving an o ening t erethrough,
a second disk united to t e mar in and covering one side of the first-name disk and its opening, and a tongue united to the firstnamed disk at one end of the opening and proj ecting from the opposite or back side of the first-named disk..
' 4. A paper-clasp comprising a metal disk having a marginal flange projecting from one. side, and a tongue projecting from the same side as the flange, said tongue being stamped from the portion of the disk within the flange 'si'asod having a portion'thereof cut and pressed beyond one of its opposite faces for forming a spring-tongue which is free at one end and united at its opposite end to the main body of the disk, a second disk ap lied to the oppov site face of the s ring-meta disk and cover.- ing the opening ormed by the stam ing out of the tongue, and a third disk of cel uloid "or equivalent material applied to the outer face of the second disk and having its marginal edge crimped or turned over the marginal edges'of said second-named disk and against the rear face of the spring-metal disk.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my 4 5- hand this 7th day of February, 1905.
