Description

' PATENTE@ PEB. 13, 1906.
' E. MGM.- SAWYBR` BUILDING BLOCK.
APPLIOMION :F1/,LED MAR.9. 1005.
' Charlotte, in the county of UNITED srArEs .PATENr oEEIoE.
' FRANK MGM. SAWYER, QF CHARLOTTE, NORTHVCAROLINA.
BUILDING-eLook.
To LLZZ wiz/0m L'mwy oon/cern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MCM. SAWYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mecklenbur and State of North Carolina, haveinventeg certain nenT and useful Improvements in Build ing-Blocks; and I do declare the following to 'be a full, clear, and exact description of the clan View ot one of my bricks or invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make Aand use the same.
This invention `"relates to building-blocks;
to provide a molded artificial-stone building block or brick which Will present a smooth unbroken outer and inner surface to a Wall Speclication of Letters Patent.
Appiioamn ned March 9.1905. sera1No.249,z5e.
and one ofthe principal objects of the same is and which will provide vertical Ventilating-- o enings or air-passages from the bottom to t e top of the Wal1.
Another object is to provide a building block or brick which can be manufactured at slight cost and Which will break joints when laid and in which the corners of the Wall Will be braced and tied, owing to the contour of the bricks and the manner in which the same are laid in forming .the Wall.
These 'and other objects are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Whichf Figurel is a plan view of aWall durin the course of-construction With bricks ma e in accordance Withmr invention. Fig.'2 is a blocks, and Fi A3 is aperspective view of the same.
eferringto the drawings for ticular description of my invention, the numoral 1 designates a brick or block which may be 'molded of cement and sand or other plastic material, said brick consisting of the plain front surface 2, extendin across the brick, and. ends 3,WhicI1 are also unbroken, and the oblique Walls 4 upon the inside ofthe brick, the wall or surface 5. con- .nesting the oblique surfaces, and thus formin 1 the substantially rectangular feet 0W- a more pary entirelyr tied, providing vertical air-spaces 7 in .Patented Feb. 13, 1906.
ing to the contour and dimensions of the brick a wall can be built in which the ybricks are reversed in each alternate layer, as shown in Fi 1 of the draWin s, and all the 'oints Will t us be broken an .the bricks be mlly 5o t e Walls, and the air-s aces in the corners divided into four equal-l divisions braced by the web 5 of the brick. A brick made in accordance with my invention is comparatively 5 5 li ht in Weight, requires less material to manacture thesa'me than is required in bricks of ordinary construction; While the advantages of a Ventilating-Wall are attained by the use ofthe brick and at .the same time the cor- 6o ners of the Walls "are braced. and tied in a strong and efficient manner.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the prin- '65 ciple or sacrificing anyof the advantages of this invention..
Having thus described my invention, What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 7o The herein-described'building-Wall made up ofbricks or blocks having three unbroken surfaces 2, 3, 3, the surfaces 3, 3, formingthe inner and outerfacing of the Wall, and a recessed side` forming feet 6, the inner Walls 4 of 7 5 which are oblique and providing the inner Wall or web 5,;said blocks being placed in reverse order in eachal'ternate layer to break joint and to providmyertical Ventilatingspaces 7 between the bricks rand to form cross 8o bracing-Websinthe corners of the Wall, essentially as described.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing wit- IIGSSGS,
FRANK MoMfsAWYER. y
