To all whom it may concern:
. Be itknown that l, GEORGE DINKEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Jersey City, Hudson county, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Hangin Over-.
driven Centrifugal Machines, of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.
My inventipn relates to centrifu al ma- -chines hung and driven from above. lere'tofore in apparatus of this character the basket has been secured to a rotatable hollow sleeve or shaft sup orted u on a non rotatable fi'om an e evated bearing which admitted of slight lateral swing or deviation from the vertical or plumb, the lower end of the rotatable sleeve resting upon washers composed alternately of steel and composition, seated upon the lower end of the rionconstituting the bearing upon W eh, the basket and hollow spindle rotated.
. The main objectl of my invention is to afford practicable means whereby the primary central supportin spindle or shaft, having the centrifugal asket attached l directly thereto, may be rotatably mounted and controlled, thus dispensing entirely with the secondar)r hollow shaft and its attendant complications and simplif and` chea en the structure as a whole. l'ncidentally aim to reduce frictional resistance by substitutingrolling surfaces for slidin surfaces as a means of rotatable support or thes indle.
y invention consists, primarily, 1n the use of a sin le, preferably solid, rotatable shaft or spin e supported upon a so-ealled. balland-socket or universal pint, which allows therotatable shaft, to the lower end of which the basket is rigidly attached, to adapt itself within certain prescribed limits to gyratory motion or any lateral play or deviation of its longitudinal'axis from the perpendicular durin use. l
F'lltiy invention includes certain, specific means for counteracting the tendency to lateral oscillation on the part of the rotatable spindle and for centrahzing the same by resilient pressure. This has been accomplished in connection with a non-rotatable s indle before re erred to 5 but no practicable manner has heretofore been devised, so far as I am aware, for thus controlling and centralizing a rotai per end of the non-rotatable spindle and table spindle, so that this feature of my invention is a distinguishing and important one and contributes largely to the successful employment and operation of. the'single solid rotatable shaft. In this connection my in'- vention may be said to consist, essentially, in fixedly and independently sup )orting the resilient buffer heretofore attacllied'to the up- 1n providing such buffer with a central bushing or sleeve in which the upper end of the rotatable shaft travels in such .manner that the resilient buffer tends constantly to centralize the shaft without interfering with the rotation thereof, as hereinafter set forth.
Another feature of terposition between the sup iorting universal joint and the rotatable spindle of antifrictionrollers u on which the rotatable spindle travels, saidp antifriction-rollers being arranged concentrically with relation to the center of support. Incidentall in this connection my invention embraces tfie idea of hanging the rotatable spindle from a central point with which all bearing-surfaces are concentric, as hereinafter set forth.
Finally, my invention comprehend s certain other features inthe construction and arrangement of arts hereinafter described and claimed speci cally.
In t e accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of an overdrlven centrifugal hung according to 4m a similar View of a modifi/ved form of hanger, the basket being omitted. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section` upon plane of line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a diagram illustrating the concentricityof the bearing-surfaces.
A is asocket piece or hanger secured by its Hangs a to any suitable stationary elevated support and formed at its lower extremity with a semiglobular bearing cup or socketa, provided with a lining a2 of Babbitt metal or other antifrictionV composition. Resting in 's concave bearing-surface a2 invention; Fig. 2
plate 0 formed on its upper side with the annular groove c for the reception of antifrictionrollers d d, which in turn support the annular plate E, formed on its under side with the annular groove e, fitting over the-said antifricti ori-rollers d d. The lower annular lateC is is a he1ni spherical bearing B, supporting an annular' my invention is the inkeyed to the hemispherical bearingl A by one or more pins i5 b or otherwise held against rotation thereon, and in like manner-the upper annular plate E is keyed by studs fbrother- F without departing in lace upont per end o osition of the nut-lock I and is referably `has a top flange l', b
wise 'secured to thebearing-nut F. ing-nut F engages with the male screw-thread g, formed onthe rotatable spindle G,v and thereby suspends thelatter through the inedium ci the annular late E upon the antifriction-rollers d d. rghe drawin s show the bearing-nut F as formed with a ange f on its lower side, so that the said nut rests upon and is connected directly with the uper annual plate E, although obviously t e an e f ma consist of a separate piece or was er keye or lotherwise secured to the nut from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect, which contemplates in a broad sense the suspension ofthe rotatable shaft or spindle G upon a rotatable bearin seated upon the hemispherical bearing The roller-bearing herein shown is a preferred means of support for the spindle G, althou h other forms may be substituted, if ioun expedient, with substantiall the same result.
T e rotatable spindle G is preferably, though not necessarily, made solid to aifcrd the maximum of strength with the minimum of area in cross-section. To its lower extremity is rigidly secured the basket H, held he threaded end of the spindle G y jam-nuts h h A jam-nut I is also ernloyed at the up er end of the spindle to lock Fin lace. The extreme u e G extends above t e the bearin -nut the spin ormed with an annular knob or caring g foren agement with the inner sides of the sleeveushin J. f
A centralizing rubber K surrounds the lower portion of the sleevebushing J, being confined between it and the cylindrical sides Z of a gland L. The latter which itis secured to the fiange a of the anger A. A bearingplate M rests between the lower edge of the gland L and the flange y' on the lower end of the sleeve-bushing J and acts as a floor-suv ort for the buffer medium K, the under si e of which latter is held in place by nuts N N engaging with a screw-thread formed on the up er end of the bushing J The buffer K is he d against turning in its socket by compression and frictional contact, the nut N being held by a bolt 'it against rotation on the bushin J. The sleeve-bushing J protects the resilient medium from actual contact with the rotary spindle G without rctarding the rotation of the latter oi' impairing the utility of saidresilient medium in controlling and centralizing the spindle by counteracting or comensating for lateral play or variation of the ongitudinal axis of t e spindle from its true vertical line of rotation. The upper surface of the bushing-flange is convex and concentric with the center d of the hemispherical bearing B, and the under surface of t e bearing-plate M is concave and concentric with The bear- Y or equivalent buierv said center t `ofy the hemispherical bearing B,
so that the o posed surfaces of the bearing-` plate M and ange j are adapted to slide over applied in any appropriate manner, as by belts or'pulleys, gearing, and electric motor having itsrotor attached to the spindle G and its stator supported in concentric bearin as set forth 1n my application, Serial No. 114,358, filed July 5, 1902, as indicated in outline in Fig. 2, or by an mechanical expedient which ma be avai able. Provision is ma( e for submerging the bearing of rotation in a lubricant by any suitable means, as by an oil-cu O, shown in Fig. 1 as attached directly to t e heinispherical bearing B, the said cup containing and inclosing the annular plates C E andantifri'ction-rollers d (l, the oil being fed through the hanger A by a pipe o and the overflow escaping throu h pipe O into a receiver 02. ln Fig. 2 the oi -cup O into the hanger A as by pipe oa `and works through the bearings into the said cup O.
The hemispherical bearing B is formed with one or more recesses b2 occu yin a horizontal plane with the center b w en t 1e parts are at rest, as in the drawings. Projecting into each of these recesses 'b5l is a stationary stud a, preferably formed by the extension of a screw in the side of the hanger A. Thus the oscillation oi the bearing-B u on its seat a is restricted within prescribed 'mits in all directions, and any tendency of the, bearing to yield or rotate with the spindle G is counteracted. This limited degree of oscillation is sufficient for all practical purposes, since very slight play or clearance between the sides of the recess b2 and the stud a9, owing to their proximity to the hemispheric center of sup ort b', of t e spindle G Jf'rorn the vertical or plumb.
B reference to Fig. 4 it will be seen that all the carin s are concentric with the oint or center b o the hemispherical bearing upon is external, and the oil is fed will allow considerabledeviation which center b the rotatable spindle is racticall suspended and which may be esignate thehernis heric ointoi sus ension P P P i IZO normal osition with its longitudinal axis in a vertical ine.
Itwill be seen that by my plresent invention the bearing upon whicht espindle and aiaoaa basket rotate is above the point of support of the basket instead of below the same and that I am thus enabled to dispense with a secondary hollow rotatable sleeve or spindle and to apply power directly to a sing e central rotatable spindle or shaft which may be made the disk-bearings heretofore used I greatly j ported upon and su p Y on said healing,
reduce the .resistance to be overcome by -the power applied and render the operation of the a paratus more smooth and regular.
