Letters Patent No. 81,188, dated August 18,1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOVEL-PLOWS.
EH12 Stimuli march in in tlgese Enters tinted nut mating part III its 5mm.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, B. F. MCCOLLESTER, of California, in the county of Monitean, and State of Missouri, I
have invented a new and improved Shovel-Plow; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ,of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which i Figure l is a horizontal section through line x a: of fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a front elevation.
The object of this invention is so to construct and attach shovel-plows to their standards or beams that they can be adjusted at any inclination, and, when worn out or injured on one end, can be reversed-without difiiculty. I I
In the drawings- 7 A indicates the standard or beam, and B is the shovel-plow, the latter having its two ends symmetrical, so that either end, at pleasure, may be set downwards to perform the work.
Attached to the centre of the shovel, on the rear side, is a plate, 0, having aiprojection, c, at each end, each of the projections being provided with a socket or bed, in its rear edge, to receive and hold the lower end of the standard. The latter is, at its lower end, jrounded, so as to fit neatly into the bed prepared forit. When in this position, a block, D, of metal, having a. similar socket or bed in its front side, is placed across the standard, about midway between the projections or lugs, c c, and is secured in that positionby'mea'ns of two bolts, E E, one at each end. The bolts pass through the block 1), and also through the plate C and plow B, forming the only means of attaching the plate, to the plow, and the plow to the standard, and at the same time the only means of clamping the block against the plow-standard, so as to hold the latter securely and firmly. The bolts-E E are provided with screw-nuts e e, by which they can be tightened up to any required degree. The standard A may be provided with ashoulder, a, which shall rest against the upper lug, e, and prevent the plow from working upward, or the clamp alone may be left. to control the plow, and hold it in place. I
It is obvious that, with this device for attaching theblade of the plow to the standard, the plow can be set at any inclination, to one side or the other. '13y leaving oil" the shoulder'a, it can also be adjusted up and down, to any extent required. -Whenyworn out atone end, it is only necessary to reverse it, and it will still outwear a new plow, without repairs or further expense.
It is believed that in simplicity, economy, and convenience, this combination of double-pointed plow and fastening is unrivalled by anything now in use.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the double-pointed shovel-plow 13 with the standard A, plate 0, having lugs c a, block D, bolts E E, and screw-nuts e e, substantially as and for the purpose above set forth.
To theabove specification of my improvement, I have signed my hand, this 13th day of June, 1868.
