Letters Patent No. 81,178, dated August 18, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
flit e saint Ititttth it in than 3mm patent mm making and in its same.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH KRAMER, of St. Louis, in the county of St. I ouis, and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Locks and Stops for Window-Sashes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of this invention is to provide a lock and stop for window sashes. In this construction of the window-stops and sashes, one of the wooden strips, usually employed to hold the'sash in the frame, and denomis noted the inside stop, will be dispensed with. The device consists of tongues, arranged to' project from face-plates afiixed to the inner faces of window-jamhs, and also a looking-device, pivoted to the said face-plate, and arranged to be turned out over the bottom sash when'it is down, so as to hold it from being raised up until released.
. To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improved locks and stops for window-sashes, I will proceed to describe their construction and operation.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation of the improved attachments, as applied to a window.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of the two sashes, with the tightening-lever or stop applied to them.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation of the face of the jamb, exhibiting the face-plate attached thereto, and the projecting metal stops; also the lock for holding the bottom sash down.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional elevation of the same parts shown in fig. 3.
The frame A is made similar to all ordinary frames, with the exception of having the inside stops and parting-strips a discontinued on one side of the frame. On that side which has no inside stops or parting-strips, an outside stop, a, will be used, as usual, as is shown in fig. 3. There will also be secured to the face of the framestile on that side, a face-plate, B, which will have 'two slots or grooves in it, for the reception of the metallic tongues b, that project forward from the'face of the jamb, as shown in fig. 4, for the purpose of engaging the sashes, which are provided with grooves in their edges-for their reception. These metal tongues are used in lieu of the usual wooden stops or parting-strips for holding the sash in the frame. They may easily be inserted in their places when both of the sashes are placed in the frame, and run down to the bottom of the frame. The pivoted stop 6 is an L-shaped metallic lock-piece, pivoted in the top of the face-plate B, and arranged to be turned;-so as to bring its-horizontal arm out over the top of the bottoui sash w-hen'it is down, thereby securely locking th sash down, when the window is to be securely closed. A recess in the face of the plate 13 receives the horizontal locking-arm when it is turned back. A lever, C, is secured to a fulcrum-pin, c, which is attached to the bottom sash D, on thetop rail thereof. The front end of this lever is rounded, as shown in fig. 4, so as to prevent moving the upper sash D, against which it impinges, so as to press both sashes against their stops, for the purpose of holding the sashes in any required position, 2'. e.,either up or down, in the same manner windows hung with weights and pulleys are operated.
Having described my invention, what I claim, is-
1. The faceplate B, provided with metallic tongues b, for the purpose of holding and guiding the sashes,
when applied to the window-frame A, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
i 2. In combination with the face-plate B, and itstongues b, the pivot b, for securing and locking the sashes, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set may hand in presence of- FRIEDRICH KRAMER. Witn csscs:
LOUIS GAUVAIBY,
Oscars Lso Dzmrzxo.
