UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BUILDING BLOCK OR WALL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1906.
Application filed March 7, 1904. Serial No. 196,956.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, MARTIN I'IAAs, a citizen of the United States, residing in Kalamazoo township, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Building Blocks or Walls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in building blocks or walls. i
The objects of this invention are, iirst, to provide an improved artificial stone or composition building block or wall which is practically frost-proof; second, to provide an improved artiiicial stone or composition building block or wall having suitable aircham bers therein, which may be comparatively thin and at the same time sufiiciently strong for practical use.
Further objects and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a transverse horizontal sectional view of my improved building block or wall, taken on a line corresponding to line 1 l of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, portions being broken away to show structural details. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on a line corresponding to line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section-lines, and similar letters of reference refer tov similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the body portion A is formed of suitable material, preferably an artiiicial stone or concrete composition. This composition is preferably made up of Portland or like cement and sand. Embedded within the body A are vertically-arranged sheets of paper B. These sheets of paper B are perforated at suitable intervals to receive the binding posts or portions a of the body. These holes or perforations in the sheets B are alternately arranged in relation to each other,so that the perforations of the two sheets are zigzagged-that is, so that they do not register or come opposite. The connecting ortions or posts a, of the body unite the b ook or wall so that there is no danger of breaking or crushing the structure.
I preferably use corrugated paper having facing sheets thereon to form a cellular structure, as this forms a multiplicity of airspaces through the block or wall. I-Iowever, I secure a very desirable structure if paper such as building-paper or the like is used. The air-spaces secured by the use of the corrugated paper are, however, very desirable. When the structure is built up in a continuous wall, the sheets of paper are embedded in the same manner as in the blocks.
I have illustrated and described my improved artificial building block or wall construction in the form preferred by me. I desire, however, to state that it is capable of considerable variation in structural details without departing from my invention.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a building block or wall, the combination of an artificial stone or concrete body portion; and vertically-arranged sheets of corrugated paper having facings thereon, to form a cellular structure thereof, and having erforations therethrough, embedded in said ody, the said perforations being arranged in an alternating manner in relation to each other, for the purpose specified.
2.
