T0 on whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM HY BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in molds for manufacturing French rubber heels and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a mold embodying my improvements, showing the bottom plate detached therefrom. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated on the line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, on a larger scale, showing one of the mold-cavities; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a rubber heel formed by my improved mold.
My improved mold comprises detachable sections, o'l which three are here shown, the outer sections being indicated at 1 and the intermediate section being indicated at 2. The mold-cavities 3 of the French heels are formed in the opposing sides of the said detachable sections, one-half of each mold-cavity being in one of the detachable sections, so that the mold-cavities are complete when any two of the sections are secured together. The sections may be of any suitable size, and they may be provided with any suitable number of mold-cavities in their opposing sides. The said sections are made of metal, but may be made of any suitable material. They are detachably secured together by means of bolts 4, and the under side of the mold corresponding to the upper side of the heel is provided with dowel-pins 5, which are here shown as projecting from the intermediate sections 2. The sections 1 2 are provided with registering dowel-pins 6 and openings 7 to receive them. The said dowel-pins and openings cause the mold-cavities of the respective sections to exactly register when the sections are secured together by the bolts.
In connection with the detachable moldsections I employ a bottom plate8. The same is provided with. openings 9 to receive the dowel-pins 5 and is provided on its upper side with former plates or pieces 10 of the required size and shape to fit in the lower sides of the mold-cavities, corresponding to the tops of the heels molded in said cavities and also of the required shape to form the required cavities in the upper sides of the mold ed heels.
In the operation of my invention the mold is heated under a steam-press to the required temperature and the mold-cavities filled with pieces of rubber. The mold is then subjected to the action of the steam-press until the rubber in the mold-cavities has assumed the required shape and is sufficiently firm. The molded heels are then removed.
I do not desire to limit myself to the use of my improved mold in molding heels of rubber, as other suitable material may be used for molding the heels in accordance with my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- i A mold for molding heels, comprising a plurality of detachable sections having moldcavities and also having coengaging dowelpins and openings in their opposing sides, said sections being further provided with registering transverse bolt-openings, bolts in said openings securing said sections together, a bottom plate to cover one side of the mold, said bottom plate and said sections having coengaging dowel-pins and openings to se-- cure them together, and former-plates on the upper side of the bottom plate and of the required size and shape to fit in the lower sides of the mold-cavities.
