MOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 12, 1910.
Patented May 21, 1912. Serial No. 596,755.
To all whom it may concern;-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GOLDEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to molds for cast metal and especially to an arrangement thereof whereby a disk or like object of cast metal may be molded around the end or body of a metal member inserted in the mold, the cast metal fusing itself into intimate union with the body of the inserted member so that when completed the member 'and cast portion constitute a substantially integral object.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a pattern for forming a mold that embodies features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the pattern with the positions of the cope and nowel sand bodies indicated together with a sprue; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower part of the mold as formed by the pattern in the sand or other plastic material.
Referring to the drawings 1 indicates the pattern of a disk or like object which it is desired to cast around the body or end of a bar. If the bar is cylindrical, as herein indicated, a corresponding bar 2 is secured to the disk 1 as a print for the mold. A gate plate 3 of suitable proportions is secured to the face of the disk by a pair of arms 4 attached to the disk on the outer face thereof at substantially diametrically opposite points. A pair of over-flow bars 5 whose cross section is larger at their point of connection with the disk than the cross section of the gate arms 4 lead from the opposite face of the disk 1 to blocks 6 which for convenience are substantially parallel to the bar 2, and are each secured thereto by a brace or stay 7. Obviously the ,blocks 6 may be in any desired position but a convenient arrangement is that herein inclicated. As a further means of properly locating the pattern in the sand, a stop or stud pin 8 is provided, preferably at the outer end of an extension 9 of the gate plate 3.
When inserted in a flask and sand tamped vergent gate runners, and a around it with a sprue indicated at 10 resting on the gate plate, the pattern is in the position indicated in Fig. 2. On the pattern being removed, a mold is formed having a gate 9 with divergent runners 4., connecting the gate with a body 1, a chamber that corresponds to the form of the article or disk 1, a print 2 for the bar 2, and overflow pockets 6 connected with the chamber tity has impinged against the projecting end of the bar in the print and flowed past it into the spaces left by the blocks to fill the latter completely. As a direct result of this the exposed part of the bar is heated sufficiently to form an intimate union with the metal which then rises and fills the space above the gates to form the rest of the disk. As a result there is no chill formed in the cast metal so that the disk is homogeneous and substantially integral with the incased portion of the bar.
WVhile herein shown as arranged for casting a valve disk on the end of a rod, it is plain that such a disk might be cast on the body of a rod or other like objects might be formed around similar bars or rods.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not wish to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim is:
1. A mold for the purposes specified comprising a print for a bar, a pattern chamber at one end of the bar print, a gate adjacent the outer side of the chamber and in communication therewith through a pair of dipair of overflow pockets connected with the chamber by overflow channels, the gate runners and overflow channels being adapted to direct metal entering the chamber in and around the end portion of a bar placed in the bar print until the pockets have been filled.
