Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Woon, a subject of the King of Great Britain, but having legally declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States, residing at Media, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Riveting -Ma chines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hydraulic riveting-machines.
It has for its object, primarily, to provide for applying or delivering variable pressures, either in multiple or specifically, in the direct axial plane of the driving-head, to greatly simplify the construction, and consequently economize the cost of the manufacture, of the machine, and to secure these ends in an expeditious and effective manner.
Said invention consists of certain structural features, substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my inven tion, Figure 1 is a side elevation; and Fig. 2 is a substantially central longitudinal section thereof, parts being broken away in both vlews.
In the carrying out of my invention I mount or secure upon a suitable casting or frame 1 a cylinder member, (designated generally by the reference character 2.) Said cylinder member comprises a head 2", having a forwardlyopening chamber 2 and having a forward continuation or elongation 2 itself having an upward-opening chamber 2, said elongation practically extending from said head clear to the forward end of said member. A suitable distance beyond and forward of said chambered head said elongation or continuation has formed therewith a housing or bridge-like portion 2 which combines with the latter to constitute a closed chamber 2, preferably stepped at itsrear end to form a head for a piston member later described.
A driving-head 3 of the preferred general outline shown, having a rear-end downwardextending base portion 3 resting upon the casting or frame 1, has its forward end portion provided or equipped with a holder 3, adapted to receive the rivet-die 3, said driving-head being arranged in. the open chamber 2 of the cylinder member 2 with its serves to restrict the movement in a forward direction of the latter.

suitably secured or bolted upon the upper lateral edges of the cylinder member 2 for the retention in place of said portion of said head against upward deflection or displacement when in operation.
Two pistons 6 6, arranged tandem fashion A one in direct alinement with the other, occupy the chambers 2 2 and 2 of the cylinder member 2, being suitably packed or fitted therein with glands 6 6 6 and are connected or coupled together and to the driving-head 3, preferably by a continuous or common rod-bolt 6 Said rod or bolt 6 extends longitudinally through said drivinghead, being held thereto by interlocked nuts 6", applied to the former at one end, said rod also extending through one of said pistons and screwed into the other or rear piston. The piston 6 is stepped into the piston 6 and is adapted to receive hydrostatic pressure from the chamber 2' for application of the same through the latter piston to the drivinghead 3. The piston 6 some distance forward of rearward prolongation 6*, joining and of the same cross-section as the piston 6, has a relatively increased cross-section, as at 6 which constitutes the piston proper and which receives hydrostatic pressure from the chamber 2 and therefore adapted to exert or apply a proportionally increased or greater pressure to the driving-head. It is obvi ous that by bringing into requisition sepa rately either of these pistons different specific pressures may be obtained for effecting the riveting operation or that by putting into action both of these pistons theircombined or multiple pressures may be obtained, according to the demands of the work or the size of rivet or rivets it may be required to use. Also arranged in tandem fashion with the aforesaid parts is the push-back piston 7 for effecting the return stroke of the drivinghead 3, it having its stem or rod portion 7 connected to the rear end of the piston 6, preferably by screw-thread connection. Said push-back piston is fitted to work in a chamconnecting the cy member in effecting its connection to the pis-v ton 6. Within the chamber 8 of the cylinder member 8 the stem or rod portion of the push-back piston 7 is fitted or equipped with oppositelyarranged glands or packings 9, which although thus inclosed or housed out of the way maybe readily reached for renewal or other purposes b. withdrawing the screws linder member 8 to the member 2, permitting the removal of. the former.
deliver into the initial fluid or water chambers for the driving-head pistons 6 6 and the push-back piston 7 for applying hydrostatic pressure to said pistons, as in efiecting the riveting operation and effecting the return stroke of said driving-head. These pipes connect with the usual sector or disk type of distributing-valve 13, in turn connected with a well-known form of operating or controlling valve 14, having connection with a pressure inlet-pipe 14" and provided with a discharge or outlet pipe 14 A hand-actuated lever 15, the frame or casting 1 conveniently for control by the operator in conducting the riveting operation, is connected to the operating or controlling valve 14 by a link or bar 15, connected to said parts.
A stake or support 16 suitably secured in position, has its upper end arranged a short distance from and opposite to the forward or rivet-die-holder-carrying end of the driving-head 3 and is provided with a corresponding holder 16, having applied thereto a rivet-die 16 to cooperate with the aforesaid holder and rivet-die 3* 3 of said head in effecting the riveting operation.
It will be noted that in addition to the above fully-disclosed features of my invention it is also characterized for great compactness of arrangement of the parts, providing for the assembling of the latter in the minimum compass, the advantages of which are obvious.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein, as they may be changed as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. A machine of the character described, comprising a driving-head, a number of pistons of different diameters practically formed in continuation one of the other, and having abutting hollow prolongations, a rod bolt fulcrumed upon connected to one of said pistons and extend ing through the other of said pistons and connected to said driving-head, binding said pistons and the latter all solidly together, a cylinder member having chambers or cylinders receiving said pistons, and means for supply ing hydrostatic pressure to said pistons.
2. A machine of the character described, comprising a driving-head, a number of pistons of different diameters and having abutting hollow prolongations and practically formed in continuation one of the other, a rod-bolt connecting with one of said pistons and passing through the other of said pistons and connected to said driving-head binding said pistons and the latter all solidly together, a cylinder member having chambers receiving said pistons, a push-back piston and its cylinder, the latter being secured upon the 3 head end of said cylinder member and the Suitable pipes 10, 11, and 12 lead to and former being connected to one of the aforesaid pistons.

A machine of the character described, comprising a driving-head, a number of pistons of different diameters, the larger having a rearward prolongation abutting a forward extension of the smaller, and a rod-bolt secured to said smaller piston and extending through the larger piston and its prolongation and secured to said driving-head, effecting a fixed connection between said pistons and said driving-head and between said pistons themselves, a casing having chambers receiving said pistons and said driving-head.

A machine of the character described, comprising a driving-head, a cylinder member consisting of a chambered head and a forward prolongation or extension of said head, having an upward-opening chamber, said prolongation having formed therewith, some distance beyond said head a bridge or housing, combining with said elongation to consititute a closed stepped chamber, a number of pistons of different diameters practically forming a continuation one of the other, one
piston working in said chambered head and partially occupying said upward opening chamber and the other of said pistons working in said closed chamber and also partially occupying said upward opening chamber, and means connecting said pistons and driving-head all solidly together, and means for supplying hydraulic pressure to said pistons.
5. A machine of the character described, comprising a driving-head, a cylinder member consisting of a chambered head and a forward prolongation or extension of said head, having an upward opening chamber, said prolongation having formed therewith, some distance beyond and forward of said head, a bridge or housing combining with said prolongation to constitute a closed stepped chamber, a number of pistons of diflerent diameters practically forming a continuation one of the other, one piston arranged in said chambered head and partially in said upwardand means for supplying hydraulic pressure 10 opening chamber, and the other of said pisto said pistons.
