Specification of team thatent. Application filed. June 29, 1006. Serial lio.'26'7,518.
li e-tented Jan. 30, Iitltlttl.
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY CROWLEY, a eitizenof the United States, and a resident of. Duluth, in the countygof St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Railway-Track Gage and Brace, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements age bars and braces for railwa, -rails, the ob; ect bein to provide devices this character that wil be simple in construction, easily placed in position, and comprising comparatively litt e metal, thus causing a saving in ex ense.
will describe a railwa -track age and brace connecting therewit invention and then point out the nove features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a gage-bar, braces, and clips embodying my in vention. Fig. 2 shows one of the braces or Ian, and Fig. 4 is an elevation, showing a s ht modification.
Referring to the rawings, 1 designates a metalgage-bar,hereshownas havin lt'soppositely-extended flanges at the top. tie to he understood, however, that instead of this par-v ticular form of bar I .may employ bars having flanges at both to and bottom, These gage bars are arrange at suitable points between the ordinary cross-ties 2, and connecting with the bars at suitable points are brace-blocks 3 and brace-clips 4. These brace-blocks have downwardl -'extended flanges 5 and inwardlyextended anges 6, these flanges engaging, respectively, over the outer edges of the flanges on the ga e-bar and against the under sides thereof. T eblocks3 enga e theirinner ends closely against the web of t e rail at the emho yin my1 outer side,-and they are clamped in position by means of wedges 7, which see throu ,h openin s in the flanges of the er, and t e brace-e 'ps 4 are also held closely against the base-flange of the rail at the-inner side by similar wedges 8. These wedges are shown as somewhat tapered and angular in crosssection. It is to be understood, however, that round plugs or wedges maybe employed, the holes in the flanges oi the ga e-har losing round or square to suit the s ape of the wedges or plugs used. It-may be here stated that the braee-bloeks 3 need only be usedon high degree curves as the brace-clips 4 would serve the desired purpose for; a'greater por tion of the road. This arran ement I have shown in Fi t-that is, the race-clips engaged witht e base-flange of the rail at both the outer and inner sides.
As the braces have no parts extended downward along. the web portion of the gageis obvious that there will he no possibility of the railway-rail spreading or turi'iin'g.
Having thus described my invention, it
j claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A railway-track gage eomprisin a ti -liar having openings in its flanges, a clip having flange portions as engaging around the flanges of the bar, the said cli s being angu lar and bearing oniy upon t e basaflan e of the rail, and wedges passing through the o enings in the banfianges for forcing the c i s into engagement with the raihbase.
n testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin witnesses.
