To all whmn it' may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTHEW T. CHAP- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Well-Sinking Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to well-sinking apparatus, and has for its objects to provide certain improvements in the devices by which the well-tube may be gripped for the purpose of rotating it without interfering with its ver tical movement, to improve the supporting Inechanismfor the gripping devices, and to provide improved antifriction devices for the supporting mechanism.
So far as the devices adapted to grip the pipe for rotating it without interfering with its vertical movement are concerned my present invention involves certain improvements upon the generic invention set forth in my Patent No. 382,689, dated May 15, 1888. In my said patent I have described and claimed a certain mechanism involving the use of jaws of circular form provided with sharp angles for gripping the pipe and rotating it and at the same time permitting .it to move vertically. My Present invention involves the same generic feature of employing circular jaws having sharp angles to rip the pipe, but differs from the devices ilustrated in said patent, in that the circular gripping devices of each jaw of my present application are adapted to rotate on'axes lying at an angle to each other, while in the gripping devices shown in my said patent the circular gripping devices of each jaw are mounted on the same axle or on axles parallel with each other.
Mypresent invention further involves the mounting of the. circular gripping devices in a swinging frame and employing a series of circular gripping devices arranged in different horizontalplanes.
It further involves the mounting of said I circular gripping devices in a support pivotally secured to the swinging frame, so as to accommodate inequalities in the pipe.
With regard to the antifriction-bearings for the supporting mechanism my invention involves the employment of antifriction-rollers arranged in pairs between traveling rings,
jlarged detail, being a vertical said rollers having their peripheries parallel with their axes, so as to avoid outward thrust.
Referring to the drawings, Figure '1 is a plan view illustrating the gripping devices and the mechanism for carrying them. -As is usual in machines of this character, the gripping devices are mounted upon a turn-table 10, adapted to be rotated, and to that end provided on its under side with an annular rack 11, engaged by a pinion 12,
mounted on a shaft 13, so that by rotating said shaft the. turn-table, with the mechanism carried thereby, will be rotated. The turn-table is provided With the usual central passage for the well-tube 14 or the boringtools.
is provided on its under side with a flat bear ing-surface 15, which is adapted to rest upon antifriction-rollers 16 .17. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the rollers 16 17 have flat peripheries parallel with their axes and are mounted side by side upon axles 18, the ends of said axles being secured in inner and outer rings or hands 19 20, respectively. The rollers 16 17 are of the same diameter as shown in Fig. 3. As the turn-table rotates, rollers 16 17, which travel in a circular path, the rings 19 20 moving With them. The rollers 16 17 run on a rail 21, which is provided with a flange 22, as shown in Fig. 2, extending up outside of the ring 20, thereby inclosing the parts of the antifriction-bearing.
The supporting mechanism for the gripping devices consists of two carriages 23 24, respectively, mounted on the turn-table at it rides upon the As shown in Fig. 2, the turn-table 10 opposite sides of the center and adapted to .Inove radially thereupon on guides 25 26, as
shown in Fig. 5. 27 28 indicate shafts having theirends screw-threaded, which shafts are parallel with each other and are placed at opposite sides of the center of. the-turn-table, the ends of the shafts extending through suitable screw-threaded bearings in the carriages 23 24, as shown in Fig. 1. The screwthreads at the ends of each shaft 27 28 are oppositely arranged, so that when said shafts are rotated the carriages move in opposite directions. Said shafts are connected to rotate in unison by gears 29 30 31, respectively. (Shown in Fig. 1.) Each shaft 27 28 is provided with a hexagonal section 32 33 for receiving a suitable tool for rotating the pipe.

The shafts 34 35 are adapted to be rocked by bevel-gears 36 37, mounted on the ends of said shafts 34 35, respectively, which gears engage, respectively, with bevel-gears 38 39 mounted on opposite ends of a shaft 40. In order to permit of longitudinal movement of said gears 38 39, they are mounted on feathers 41 42. Consequently they may travel with thegears'36 37 as said gears are moved with their respective carriages. To hold the gears 38 39 in mesh, respectively, with the gears 36 37, the carriages 23 24 are provided with arms 43 44, re-
spectively, which embrace the shafts just back of the ears 38 39 respectively, as shown in Fi 1. y this construction it will be seen that by rocking the shaft 40 the shafts 34 35 may be rocked in opposite directions, thereby raising or lowering the gripping devices, as will be hereinafter explamed.
45 indicates a gripping jaw or support which is mounted upon the shaft 34 and keyed thereto, so as to be swung in a vertical plane when said shaft is rocked. 46 indicates a similar jaw mounted on the shaft 35 When the jaws 45 46 are in operative position, they rest on the turn-table 10; but, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, they may be thrown up' to an inclined position to carry their gnpping devices out of contact with the well-tube.
47 indicates a circular gripping device consisting of a disk mounted on a pivot 48 in the jaw 45, said pivot being so arranged that the edge of the disk engages the well-tube or other article to be gripped. 49 indicates a second circular gripping device consisting of a disk similar to the disk 47, mounted upon a pivot 50, which is also carried by the jaw 45 and is arranged at an angle to the pivot 48. The
angle of the pivot 50 is such that one of the edges of the disk 49 engages the well-tube, as shown in Fig. 1. As shown, the disks 47 49 are in different vertical planes, so that they engage the well-tube at different points in its circumference. 51 52 indicate similar disks carried by the jaw 46, said disks being mounted on pivots 53 54, respectively. By mounting the gripping-rollers in a pivoted support, as shown in Fig. 7, they may accommodate themselves readily to inequalities in the pipe, and by providing a plurality of said rollers in different horizontal planes a stronger grip is secured u on the pipe and at the same time accidenta disengagement of ,the gripping devices with the pipe in passing inequalities is guarded against.
In Figs. 9 and 10 I have illustrated the invention in itsimost improved form, the gripping-rollers in this case being carried in a pivoted support in the manner illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8. Except for this particular the construction shown in said Figs. 9 and 10 is exactly like that illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively.
That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a rotary support, a series of traveling rollers upon which said support is mounted, said rollers having their peripheries parallel with their axes and being arranged in pairs the rollers of each pair having their axes in alinement, inner and outer rings between which said rollers travel, agripping-j aw carried. by said carriage, and gripping mechanism suported on said rotary support, substantial y as described.
2. The combination. of a rotary support, traveling antifriction-rollers on which said rotary support is mounted, said rollers being arranged in pairs, a common axle for each pair of rollers, inner and outer rings in which the ends of said axles are carried, and gripping mechanism on said rotary support, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a rotary support, antifriction-rollers on which said support is carried, said rollers having their peripheries parallel with their axes and being arranged to travel in concentric paths, inner and outer traveling rings between which said rollers are mounted, means for holding the rollers in position as they travel, and gripping mechanism upon the rotary support, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a rotary support, a carriage mounted on said support, a support pivotally carried by said carriage, a gripping device, a support by which said gripping device is carried, the latter support bein'g pivotally connected with said pivoted support, and cooperating gripping mechanism.

A gripping device adapted to grip a round article for rotating the same without interfering with longitudinal movement thereof, consisting of a suitable support, and a plurality of sets of gripping devices pivotally mounted. thereon, said sets of gripping devices being arranged 1n diflcrent vertical ing with longitudinal movement thereof, 0011- sisting of a suitable support, and a plurality of sets of ripping devices carried thereby, said sets of gripping devices being arranged in different vertical planes, the gripping devices of each set being in different horizontal planes, each gripping device consisting of a rotary disk mounted on a separate pivot, substantially as described.

A gripping device, adapted to grip a round article for rotating it without interfering with longitudinal movement thereof, con- .sisting of a suitable support, and a plurality of sets of ripping devices carried thereby, said sets of gripping devices being arranged in different vertical planes, the gripping devices of each set being in different horizontal planes, each gripping device consisting of a rotary disk mounted on a separate pivot, said disks being arranged so that one of the edges thereof will engage the article to be gripped, substantially as described.

A gripping device, adapted to grip a round article for rotating it without interfering with longitudinal movement thereof, consisting of a suitable pivoted support, and a plurality of sets of ripping devices carried thereby, said sets of gripping devices being arranged in different vertical planes, the gripping devices of each set being in different horizontal planes, each gripping device consisting of 'a rotary disk mounted on a separate pivot, substantially as described.

A gripping-j aw, adapted to bear against and engage a round article for cooperating with other mechanism to rotate it Without interfering with longitudinal movement thereof, consisting of a suitable support, and gripping-rollers mounted therein in different vertical planes, the axesof said rollers being arranged to lie at an angle to each other, the edges of said rollers being arranged to engage the article to be gripped, substantially as described.

A gripping-j aw, adapted to bear against and engage a round article for cooperating with other mechanism to rotate it without interfering with longitudinal movement thereof, consisting of a suitable support, and a plurality of sets of gripping devices carried thereby, said sets of gripping devices being arranged in different vertical planes, the gripping devices of each set being in different horizontal planes, each gripping device consisting of a rotary disk, said disks being so ar ranged that one of the edges thereof will ens. gage the article to be gripped, the pivots of IIO said disks being arranged at an angle to each tween which said rollers travel, and gripping other, substantially as described. mechanism upon said rotary support, sub- 18.
