UNITED STATES PATENT Orinoco MANUEL W. KAHLE, OF DUKE CENTRE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MARTHA JANE'KAHLE, OF SAME PLACE.
CALIPERS AND CENTERING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.- 230,421, dated July 27, 1880.
Application filed June 3, 1880. (No model.)
art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has general reference to a centering device; and it consists, essentially, in the peculiar construction of parts and combination of elements, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings already referred to, which serve to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved centering device. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion thereof, illustrating its application. Fig. 3 is a plan, and Fig. 4 a plan of the central tube.
Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in all the figures.
The object of my present invention is the production of a convenient instrument for finding the center of cylindrical or other work, the center of cylinders or other hollow parts, my said invention being an improvement upon a similar device described and claimed in a specification filed by me in the United States Patent Office May 17, 1880, as serial No. 9,934. In this device I employ .one pair of legs pivoted to a central tube, through which is passed a scribing-rod, the legs being connected to a pinion, so as to move equally from or'toward said central scriber. This device is particularly designed for finding the center line of angular parallelbodies, while my present instrument is more particularly adapted for finding the center of cylinders, cylindrical bodies, 850. i
In the drawings, the letter A designates a tubular body having near its lower end four pairs of lugs, B, between which are pivoted four curved legs, 0, the upper ends of which are formed into segments D D D D, having their centers in the points of pivoting of said legs 0. V
The segments D D of two oppositely-located legs are of less diameter than those at right angles, (marked D,) so as to allow them to pass below the said segments D D. The faces of these segments areprovided with teeth engaging a bevel-pinion, E, revolving on the end of the tube A, the same as that described in the specification already referred to.
It will now be readily observed that by revolving the said pinion by its head F the legs 0 are moved in a direction corresponding to that of said pinion, and that to find the center of a circular cylinder-G, for instance-nothing needs to be done but to grasp the body by the four legs 0, as shown in Fig. 2, and then to slide the scriberHdown upon the body, when
said scriber willcorrectly indicatethe center of said body. i
It will be further observed that it makes no difference whether the part of which the center is desired to be found is above or below the plane where the points of the legs (3 cmbrace said body, so that the center of raised or depressed surfaces may be as readily found and marked as those on the same plane.
In finding the end centers of shafting or the centers of cylinders, holes,or otherdeep places where easy access with other tools cannot be had, this device is as readily adjusted and a convenient means for accomplishing the desired result as any thatcan be devised, while, owing to'its extreme portability and cheapness, it is far superior to any other self-centering device with which I am acquainted.
It is perfectly obvious that the points of the legs ,0 may be formed into the usual shape of compasses, inside calipers, or both inside and outside calipers, without changing the nature of my invention.
I do not wish to be understood as here claimingacenter-scriber having two legs with a central scriberbetween them, such a device being fully described and claimed in my said application of May 17, 1880 but,
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States A centering device consisting, essentially, of
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as 10 my invention I have hereto set myhand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MANUEL W. KAHLE.
