This invention relates to a new construction of a vehicle to be versely of the car and in which the rows 01 seats arc preferably separated by a' centre. aisle or passage-way and are placed successively in higher planes on the body of the car from one end of the car to the other. Means are also provided by which the canbody may be, rotated upon its axis and turned around a sutlicient distance for the seats to face in a different direction and opposite to that they formerly occupied without switching the cartruck i another track or running the car on a turn-table.
With this object in view the invention con sist-s in certain novel features of construction and arrai'igoment of )arts, all of which will be hereinafter described ed out in the drawings,
details of the invention and which accompany and form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a sidc elevation of an obscrvation-trolley-car railway constructed according to my invention Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the mechanism by means of which the car-body may be rotated on the platform of the truck and Fig. 3 a plan view showing the arrangement of the seats and tho car-body-operating mechanism,
liiito letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring particularly to the drawings, A denotes the plat form of the car, supported by trucks ll of any ordinary or suitable description and construction and running on a track a. A car-body is supported by the platform in a movable relation, preferably as follows: Fixed to the bottom of the car-body. A, which is supported by the platform A, is a horizontal gear whcel C, the shaft C of which prcfcrably passes through the bottom of the car-body and is suitably and rigidly Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed July 1%1905. 8erial No. 289.719.
State of New York-have invented a certain I new and usetul ()bservation-Trolley-(ar Rail- 2 way, of which the following is a specifical the invention, such as will cuused on an electric road I in which the seats are arranged to be trans and specif cally pointi which show the prcterred embodiment and arrangement of the Patented Jan. 23, 1906.
' fastened to the latform A. The teeth ot the wheel C prefera ly mesh with the )iuion l), located ordinarily within the cariody and secured to the vertical shaft (1, which carries a bevel-gear 1), constructed and arranged to engage with a bevcbgcar E, carried b y a horizontal shaft c supported in suitable bearings. The shaft c also preferably carries a gearwhcel E, which engages with the pinion F of an electric motor B. Other speed reducing gears may be substituted, if desired, for the gear E and pinionh".
The motor F, which is controlled in the or d inary manner by a suitable switch, is prcfcrably electrically connected with a metal ring on which a spring-finger j" continuously pletcd between the motor F, which is cloctrically connected with the ring f, and the said spring-lingerj" being in electric connection with tho current-piclriug-up device of the vehicle, which may bc of any suitablc or wellknown form. as a plow or irollc \'-urm, which dcviccs also serve to actualc clcctric motors by which the trucks are impelled in the ordi- 3 nary manner. The shaft c may also he manually actuatcd, as by a, hand-crank c, if prcfern-d, in ordcr to turn the car-body around 1 on the platform A, and in order to lessen the friction between the car-body and the platform suitable antifriction devices may be cmloycd as, for example, rollers (1,.
The current-pickirig-lip devices may consist, as stated, of a plow d, attached to thc trucks in the ordinary manner, or of atrolley arm a? of any ordinary or suitable construction attached to the car-body It. The. said oar-body preferably has a ccutral longitudinal passage-way a running between the stepped seats A and the said car-body may also be provided with any suitable or desirable top or covcriug, if desired, in order to protect the passengers from the boat of the sun or from rain.
Among other great advantages of the use of this invention are the unobstructed views obtained by passengers of objects of intcrcst along the routcstravclcd and thcfact that l he car-body may be swung out at an angle to t liccar'track in case such a. point of vicw is d1- sircd on any occasion and also the case with which the car-bodymay be reversed at one operation when at the end of the linc and thc car started back again in the opposite dircction to that formerly pursued by the same.
As it is cvidcnt that many changes in thc bears, the electric circuit being thus cmn fIO construction; form, proportion, and relative arrangement of parts mi ht be resorted to without departin from t e spirit and scope of my invention, I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of arts shown and described and that such 0 anges and elquivalents may be substituted therefor and t lat What I claim as my invention is 1. In an observation-trolley-car railway, a track, a )air of trucks movable along the track, a platform carried b the trucks, a caibody rotatably supported y the platform intermediate the said trucks, an electric conduc tor and a traveling contact to engage therewith.
2. In an observation-trolley-car' railway, a track, a )air of trucks movable along the track, a platform supported b the trucks, a car-body rotatably supporte by the platform intermediate the said trucks, means to rotate the car-body, an electric conductor and a traveling contact to engage therewith.
3. In an observation-trolley-car railway, a
track, a platform supported by the trucks,
means to impart movement to the said trucks, a car-body havin a series of stepped seats rotatably su porte by the platform intermediate of sai trucks, an electric conductor,h and a traveling contact to engage therewit i 4. In an observationtrolley-car railway, a track, a air of trucks movable along the track, a platform supported by the trucks, a car-bod having a series of step ed seats and rotatab y su ported by the plat orm intermedial'i'athe sai trucks, means to rotate the carbouy, an electric conductor and a traveling contact to engage therewith.
' In testimony of the-foregoin specification I do hereby sign the same, in t e city of New York, county and State of New York, this 26th day of June, 1905.
