Be it known that l, CHARLES J. FRANZ, a citizen ol the United States ol America, and a resident of the city oi Baltimore and State of iviaryland, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Buttons or Checks, of-vnich the iollowing is a specification.

The particular object of my invention is to provide a door-check for theaters and the lllE6 WlllCl1 is adapted to be used by persons going out or" the theater between the acts to enable them to return.

Under the present practice of giving doorchecks in the form of tickets the tickets can be passed from one person to the other and are frequently sold.

It is the object of my invention to prevent the selling of these tickets and to make it im possible for any person other than the one who received the check to use-it.

With these objects in view my invention consists in certain constructions and arrangement of parts, the preferred form of which will be first specifically described and then the invention pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, wherein the same part is designated by the same reference-numeral wherever it occurs, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the lapel of acoat with a door check or button thereon. Fig. 2 is a sectional view ol the door-check. Fig. 3

is an enlarged detail view showing the fastening means. Fig. 4 is a view ol the cord or tape and showing the means by whichits ends are secured to the button or check.

I designates a button or check, which is composed of the front portion-2. 'lhe'portion 2 is provided around its edge with the flange 3.

4 designates the back of the button, which is also provided with a flange 5 around its edge. The flange 5 is, however, slightly smaller than flange 3, so that it will closely fit into the flange 3 and securely hold the two parts of the button or check together.

6 designates a sheet of material which is preferably placed over the front portion 2 of the check and has thereon suitable printed matter, the edges of the sheet being held in position by being clamped flanges 3 and 5.

7 designates a tape or cord, one end of which is preferably provided with a knot 25, and the tape or cord adjacent to the knot is clamped between the flanges 3 and 5 with the knot on the inside or the button, asis shown in Fig. 2, to hold one end of the tape or cord securely. The other end of the cord is provided with a hook or barb 9, which in the form of construction illustrated consists of a plate of sheet metal having the projecting wings 10, adapted to be bent around the cord or tape 7 in order to attach the hook to the cord. The free end of the plate. which forms the hook or barb is bent back upon itself, as best shown in Fig. 4, to form the barb. In the flange 5 of the back-plate 4 of the button or check I provide an o ening 11, which is of between the such a size as to allow t e barb 9 to be passed therethrough, but is so narrow that in pass ing' the barb through the opening. the barb .Will be forced together, so that alter it has been forced through the opening it will catch and hold in the manner shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Preferably and as shown the opening 11 is provided with flanges 12, which extend inwardly and serve. as an additional means of preventing the barb from being withdrawn after it is inserted.

From the construction above described it is evident that when a check has been secured in the buttonhole or other suitable place by passing the barb through the opening 1] it will be impossible to remove the check except by severing the tape or co1d7. As soon as this is done the fact will show, and a check which has been so mutilated will be refused by the door-keeper. it will thus be soon that l have provided a check which is simple in construction and cheap to manufacture which will effectually prevent the transfer from one person to another .of door-checks or similar devices.

While I have described what 1. believe to be the preferred form of my invention, 1 desire to have it understood that many changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and form of the parts without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
