UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COPYING-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 1906.
Application filed May 12,1905. Serial No. 260,165.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND EMIL J AGEN-' BERG, a citizen of the German Empire, and a resident of Dusseldorf, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Providing Copies of Letters on Tissue-Paper and the Like with Protective Borders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in copying-machines, the object of which is to provide in one operation with the copying the copy with a protective border along the right or left edge and on the side of the copyingpaper which is not intended to receive the copy or eventually to provide such border on both sides.
I attain my object by the improvements shown on the drawings herewith, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a copying-machine where the protective strip is, as alluded to, pasted on the side of the copying-paper which does not receive the copy; and Fig. 2 shows the same machine arranged so as to permit the pasting on of another strip, so that the margin of the copying-paper may be lined with the protective border on both sides. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sect-ion of the machine above the feed-table, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of a sheet provided with the border.
In all the figures the machine illustrated is of the kind described, comprising, mainly, a shaft a, holding a roll of copying-paper; a tank I), filled with water; a guide-roller 0; another roller (Z, efiecting the smoothening and pressing out the moistened copying-paper; the copying-cylinders e and f; the table/L, feeding the documents intended for copying, and the discharge roller or cylinder 6 for detaching the copies.
In a suitable place in the machine beneath the end of the cylinder 6 where the border is to be applied to the margin of the copyingpaper I provide a reel 70, carrying a paper strip or a strip of any other material suitable for lining the copying-paper along either of its longitudinal edges, with a protective border adapted to prevent a tearing of the said margin. The said strip may be gummed on one side, the gummed side being on top, and be made to pass the end of the rotatory cylinder 6, where it meets the copying-paper coming, when the machine is in operation, from the aforesaid roll a by way of the guide-roller 0, the margin of the said copying-paper covering the said gummed strip and being with the same passed between, the said cylinder 6 and the other rotatory cylinder f, the two pressing upon, and thus effecting the fast adhesion of the strip on, the lower side, while the upper side of the copying-paper receives, as usually, the documents to be copied.
As is shown by Fig. 2, there may be provided an additional reel k above cylinder 6, which carries strips around guide Z, so as to meet with the gummed side downward the margin of the copying-paper just above the other border on the other side of the paper. By being passed between the said cylinders f and c it is pressed on and made to adhere to the upper side of the copying paper. In this way the said margin is supplied with the protective border on both sides. The machine may also be provided with gumming devices to provide the strips with an adhesive in case they are ungumrned or only imperfectly gummed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
l. A copying-press provided with means for feeding a length of copying-paper through the press, means for copying a writing on one side of the paper, and means for simultaneously gumming a reinforcing-strip along the longitudinal edge on the other side of the paper, substantially as specified.
2. A copying-press provided with a copying-cylinder, a pressure-roller above the same, a feed-table, a paper-carrying reel, and a stripcarrying reel beneath the cylinder, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
FERDINAND EMIL JAGENBERG.
