IMPROVEMENT 1N sEoEs EOE EATEING Ann orEEE EUErosEs.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LOUIS Dsrn JEANDnoN-Fnanv, of Paris, in the Empire of' France, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in" Shoesfor Bathing and other Purposes; and I do hereby declare that` the follow-l ing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figurel repr-esents a side elevation of a bathing-shoe constructed according to my improvement.
Figure 2 represents an inverted view of the same, illustrating the constructionof the sole.
Figure 3 represents a longitudinal vertical section ofthe same. l
. Figure 4 represents a similar view of a shoe, resembling that shown in figs, 1, 2, and 3 in all essential particulars, but having no heel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
'The object of this invention is more especially to provide for the more veiiectual protection 'of the feet of bathers from the disagreeable effects of walking'over a sandy beach after leaving the water, and also against injury from Vcontact with stones, shells, andother sharp or ang'ular substances while bathing, and at the same timeto obtain a shoe more pleasant to wear than the shoes ordinarily worn by bothers; and to this en-d, it consists mainly in a novel construction of the sole, whereby the water is drained from the shoe by means of openings therein, but provision is made forrthe eiectual'cxclusion oilall solid substances.
To enable-others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings. i u
J is the upper part ofthe shoe, which may be composed of cloth or 4anyother material not liable toinjnry by absorption of water.V i
K is the lacer or string with which the shoe is secured to the foot.
g is aninner sole, of cork orY other suitable material, for protecting the foot from injury by the inequalities' of the sole.
a is a solo, of leather, to which is secured the upper or cloth J. c is a sole, of brass, securely. riveted to the sole a, for the purpose of keeping the same in shape while it is in a saturated condition'.
These three soles, g, a, and c, are pierced with openings, I), for the purpose of draining the water from the. shoe when the operation of bathinfbr is over. l i
The foot-is protected from injury liable to be iniiieted by the penetration of gravel and other sharp or angular substances up through the openings b, byl means ofa sheet of wire ganze inserted between the soles g and a, or a and e, whereby the vpassway through the openings b is eiectuallyblockaded to said substances, but is' sufficiently open, by means of the interstices of the uire gauze, to let out the water.
d is an 'outer strip ofleather sole riveted to the brass sole c, to prevent the annoyance of slipping consequent to ,the contact of the brass sole c with the wet ground when ther performance of swimming ceases, and pedestrial locomotion is resorted to; and also for the purpose of elevating the sole proper of the Ishoe slightly above the ground, so that thc openings b may not come flat against the earth, in which case sa'idfopenings Would be closed by said- Contact, and the'ivater remain `in the shoe. i l
7L is a metallic plate between the soles, and projecting;v forward from the heel far enough to strengthen the shank.VV i l z'is a metallic band surrounding the heel c.
What lI claim as my invention, desire to' secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A shoe, constructed with a perforated sole, through which, on the b ather emerging from the water, egress is provided for the Waterfrem the interior ofthe shoe, substantially as herein' described. i
2. The metallic gauze, in combination with the perforated solo, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
