Be it known that I, EDWARD L. RIESKE, a citizen of the United States,.residing at Troy, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Clamps; and I do declare. the following `to be a full, clear, and ex'act description of theinventiomsnchas will enable others skilled in'the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart o f this 'specilication g My invention relates to improvements in pipe-clampsof the type designed forrepairlng leaks in plping-rsuch, for example, as gas, water, and steam pipes. Y
The object of the invention is to provide a.. clamp which may be quickly placed in casses of emergency in positions upon piping to most eiectually stop any leakage therein.
Preceding a detail description of my invention reference is made to lthe accompanying drawings, of which` forth. Vtures of the clamp are the same, and [will Figure lis a view illustrating my improved pipe-,clamp in an operative position upon a piece of piping. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the -clamp removed from the pipe. Fig. 3 is a View of a modification of thenlamp adapting it more suitably for pipes of larger diameter. Fig. et is a cross-sectional view of the clamp as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one-half of the clamp as shown in Fig. 3.
In a detail description of my invention similar reference characters indicate correspondlng parts. l designates a metallic pipe clamp constructed of suitable resilient metal, having on thelinte'rior thereof a suitable packing 4 and designed to 'inclose a pipe 3 to stop any leakage therein. The clamp Whenconstructed of a single piece of material is designed to be used upon pipes of the smaller diameters. The clamp as shown inLFigs. 3, 4, and -5A is designed to be used on pipes of larger diameters and instead of being constructed of one piece is made of two similar parts 1 1, which are united at their longitudinal edges at opposite points, as will hereinafter be more fully.- set Iun all other respects the essential feanow proceed to describe said essential details of construction. Theseconsist of a series of oppositely-bent loops 2 2', which are stamped in the metal adjacent to one of the longitudinal edges of the clamp. The loops 2 when the clamp is in an operative position, as in Figs. l and 2, are caused lto enter a corresponding number of slots 5, stamped from the metal adjacent to the other longitudinal edge of the clamp vand in alinement with said loops 2 and leaving a series of loops 5'.
The length of the slots 5 is essentially somewhat greater than the lengthbf the loops 2 in order that said loops may have free entrance into said slots in the operation of 'tightening the clamp. The edge ofthe portion of the clamp Which'is prooutward to provide a tapering wall 7. The outer terminals 2" of the loops 2'are on a taper corresponding to the inclination of the Wall 7, and the said wall and said terminals 2" correspond to the taper of a wedge-shapedkey 6 and form bearings on opposite sides of said key. The key is driven through the spaces 2"' between the loops 2 2', and the clamp is thus rigidly tightened around the pipe.

Cooperating with the clamp thus formed A'are two tapered keys 6 and 6', which are driven into the clamp from opposite sides, as shown in Fig. 3. s f
In the operation of my improved pipe-clamp when the same is constructed of a single piece of Amaterial, as shown in Fig. 1, it is simply Vspread apart suiiciently to enable it to inclose the' pipe a't the point of leakage. The clamp is then initially pressed together by thehand to cause the outer ends of the loops 2 toAenter the slots 5 and the loops 5' between Said slots to lie above the loops@ 2.'. The small end of the tapered wedge 6 is then inserted between the loops 2 andV 5' at one end of the clamp for example, between the loops 2 and 5', de'- signed to receive the end of the wedge-and the said wedge is then driven through the spaces 2" between the remaining loops 2 andl 5 to a position to cause said clamp to be drawn together rigidly throughout its length. In the operation of the clamp when constructed of two parts,.as show-n in Fig.,3, the said two parts are placed about the piping in a similar vided with the slots 5 is turned at a right'angle v Theclamp when constructed of two parts l and l' manner and are pressed together to permit Correc'tion in `Letters 4Patent No. 809,327.
the initial entrance of two wedges 6 and 6 at opposite points on each side of the clamp, and the said wedges are then driven between the loops 2 and 5" until the clamp is rigidly tightened upon the piping.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A pipe-clamp having a series of loops in one portion thereof, the ends of said loops being integrally joined to said portion, and a corresponding series of slots into which said loops project, said slots having a series of adjacent parallel bars forming loops, a tapering Wall lying on the outside of said slots, anda wedge- Shaped key adapted to enter the loops on both portions of the clamp, and to draw said por- ,tions together as'shown and described.
2. A clamp for stopping leak-holes in piping` consisting of a metallic band having a l series of parallel loops stamped therein adjacent to one longitudinal edge thereof, and a vseries of parallel loops adjacent to the other longitudinal edge thereof with a series of intervening slots, a tapered wall extending throughout the length of the clamp. and an insertible key between the two series of l'oops 25 -and adapted to tighten said clamp by being confined on one side by said wall and on the other side by the inner terminals of thisJ loops.
3. A clamp for stopping leak-holes in piping, having in one longitudinal edge thereof 30 a series of stamped loops, the outer terminals of which extend on an angle to the ,body of the clamp. and the other longitudinal edge of said clamp having a series of parallel loops andV slots inclosed at their outer terminals a 35 'i tapered wallv extending throughout the length of the clamp, and a double tapered key adapted to pass between said loops and to draw the clamp together.

Rieske, lof Troy, Ohio, for an improvement in Pipe-Clamps, was erroneously issued to Gamaliel C. Myers, as owner of the entire interest in said invention; that Vsaid Letters Patent-should have been issued to the inventor, said Reake and Gamal'iel C. Myers, jointly, said `Myers being the assignee of one-v half interest only in said patent, as shown by the record of assignments in this oce;
and that the said Letters Patent shouldvbe read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Oice.

Having described my invention, I claim- 1.
