Be it known that I, HENRY F. BECHMAN, of Battlecreek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefull Improvements in Flat-Bed Web-Printing Presses; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in flatbed web-printing presses of the duplex type; and its object is to provide an attachment for such press whereby additional imbe made upon such attachment, consistmg of a supplemental printing mechanism preferably located between the iirst and second Vor upper and lower beds, the
`portion of the web in the duplex press at this point being momentarily stopped during the time that the cylinders are making impressions thereon from the type-forms on the beds. By means of this attachment third impressions in color may be made upon the web, so as to impart a striking or distinctive appearance to portions of the completed papers. No additional web guiding or feeding mechanisms are re uired, and this supplemental printin mec anism can be o erated directly from t e operative parts of t e ordinary duplex press.
The invention is shown in the drawings as applied to an ordinary duplex flat-bed webperfecting press, but of course is applicable to other fiat-bed web -printing presses. I therefore do not wish to restrict the invention to the specific form of press indicated in the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammatical view of a duplex press, indicating a longitudinal section therethrough and showing my attachment connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail.
In the drawings, h and z. represent the stationary type-beds, over which are reciprocated the cylinders H and H', which are reprocated back and forth over said beds by able mechanism, as in the well-known x press. The looping-rollers Z Z are connected by a rod L, attached to a lever A, actuated by a cam D on a transverse shaft E, which is geared to the main driving-shaft of the machine. lmown and need no further description, and their-operation' is fully described in the patent to Cox', No. 501,456, ranted July 11, 1893, and No. 478,503, of uly 5, 1892.
The portion of the web w passing over the rollers lm, m at the rear end of the machine is momentarily stopped during the time the cylinders I-I H are impressing the web upon the type-form on beds h h', and my printing attachment lis preferably located at this point.-
It comprises a platen 2, which is located between the rolls m m in such position that the web lw, moving between said rolls, passes over the face of the laten. Opposite this platen is a movable ed or type-carrier 3, which is supported on oscillating lever or levers 3, ivoted at 3b on a suitable support attache to the main frame of the press. Said levers are adapted to be oscillated to move the carrier toward and from the platen 2. The type-carrier 3 may be arranged like the bed of an ordinary latenress and is adapted to carry a typeorm, w 'ch can imprint the web against the platen 2 While the web is momentarily stationary between the rollers fm, m. Any suitable mechanism may be provided for inking the type on this carrier 3; but as this i'nking mechanism forms no part of my present invention I have not shown the same detailed herein, the inkingrollers bein merely indicated at 3c. The cams 5 are adapted to impart one reciprocatory movement to the lever E for each revolution of the shaft E which shaft rotates once for each printing stroke of the cylinders H H over the beds h L, and the cam 5 is so formed and timed that the type-carrier 3 is moved toward the platen during the time the cylinders H H are operating upon the beds and while the web is momentarily stopped between the rollers m fm. Thus the type-carrier will make imprints upon this portion of the web while the impressions are being made there'- The type-carrier is retracted out of the way before the web 'w is shifted.
From the foregoing it is obvious that this attachment can be applied to duplex presses already in the eld as well as to new presses and that it involves no addition or complication of the web-feeding mechanism of such machines nor any alteration in the o eration of the web in such press. The su p emental printing mechanism can be used or making colored impressions on the web or for addressing the papers and for other urposes,

Having thus descri ed my invention, what ters Patent, is-- l. The combination with a flat-bed webperfecting press having two separated printing couples, of a supplemental printing mechanism arranged to operate upon the web at a point intermediate the first and seci, ond printing mechanism.
2. The combination with a press having a plurality of separated printing mechanisms each comprising a bed and coacting cylinder adapted to successively print a web, of a supplementalprinting device adapted to operate upon the web intermediate the said printing mechanisms.
3. The combination with a web-perfecting press having a plurality of separated printing mechanisms each comprismg a coactmg bed and cylinder, of a supplemental printing mechanism comprising a platen and a reciprocating bed, and arranged to 'operate upon the part of the web mtermedlate the first-mentioned printing mechanisms.
4. The combination of a web-perfecting press having a pair of stationary beds and reciprocating cylinders adapted to perfect the web; with a platen-press arranged intermediate the first and second beds and cylinders, and adapted to operate upon the portion of the web intermediate said beds and cylinders.
5. The combination with a fiat-bed webperfecting press, comprising a pair of se arated stationary beds and coacting cylin ers adapted to successively operate upon the `web, of a supplemental printing mechanism,
comprising a platen and a reciprocating typecarrier, arranged to operate upon the portion of the web intermediate the first and second impression-cylinders.
6. In combination with a duplex flat-bed web-perfecting press having a pair of parallel beds, a pair ofreciprocating cylinders respectively coactin with said beds and means for feeding the we of a er successively between the beds and cy in ers to be perfected thereby, of a reciprocating printing mechanism at one end of the beds adapted to operate upon the portion of the web between the first and second cylinders.
7. The combination with a duplex press having a pair of stationary beds and coacting cylinders, means for continuously feeding the web to and from said press, means for directing vthe web successively between the beds and cylinders to be perfected thereby andmeans for intermittently moving the intermediate part of the web through the printing mechanism; of a third printing mechanism located at a oint intermediate the first and second typeeds and adapted to operate upon the intermediate part of the web while it is momentarily stationary.
8. The combination of a stationary bed, a reciprocating cylinder, means for feeding the web continuously to and from the press, and a pair of devices for looping the web between the feed and delivery and whereby it may be intermittently shifted over the bed; withv a supplemental printing mechanism arranged to operate upon the web at a point intermediate the looping devices.
9. The combination of a stationary bed, a reciprocating cylinder, means for feeding the web continuously to and from the press, and two separated devices for looping the web between the feed and delivery, and whereby it may beintermittently shifted over the bed;
with a stationary bed and a reciprocating type-carrier arranged to operate upon the web at a (point intermediate the looping devices, an a cam operated by the looping cam-shaft for actuating said type-carrier.
10. The combination with a press comprising upper and lower stationary type-beds, a pair of reciplrocating cylinders respectively coacting wit mechanism for directing a web successively between the beds and cylinders, means for feeding the web to and from the ress, and mechanism for looping the web to shift a portion thereof intermittently between the beds and cylinders, of a stationary platen and reciprocating type-carrier located in the r of t e web intermediate the first and s cylinders, and a reciprocating bar co with the reciprocating type-carrif ran ed to operate the latter whi of t e web in the press is mo tionary.
