IMPROVED ROGKING AND REGLINING-GHAIR.

TO ALL WHOM IT4 MAY CONCERN:

Be it knownthat I, DAVID COX, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful ,Combined Rocking and Reclining-Chair; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

'Ihis invention relates to an article of household-furniture.which can be used either as an ordinary rockingchair or as a reclining-chair, in which a person can restin a recumbent position, the change 4from one position to another being effected in a few moments, by devices Awhich will be hereafter fully described.

' In the accompanyingdrawingsl y Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair embodying` my improvements, it being represented in position for use as a rocking-chair. t

Figure 2' is a side elevation', partially in section, of the same, when used as a reclining-chair.

The body A of the chair, which may be either upholstered, as shown, or else provided with a cane bottom and back, is supported upon rockers B B', which rest upon the convex heads c e' of the trestles C C', the latter being secured together bythe rails `I) D'. The rockers B B' are united to the trestl-es C C bylmeans of lexible straps, E E' e e', which may be made of sheet steel, or any other suitable material, and as this arrangement of rockers, trestles, and lexible bands or straps, is precisely the same as that shown lin my patent of February 5,`

1867, it needs no further description here.

Attached to the under side 'of the seat are cleats F F', to which are. attached downwardly-projeeting stops, ff', that limit the distance to which the leaf Gr is opened, when theehair is placed in its reclining position, as shown in tig. 2.

'lhe leaf G is hinged to the rail D atti cZ. Attached to the rail D is a beam, H, to whose outer end is hinged, at ZL, a foot-rest, I, the upper surface of which may be padded, as shown at z'.

Pivoted to the sides of the foot-rest, at J J', are two ar'ms, K K', which extend back undcr the seat of the chair, and are connected tothe leaf G by means of screws`g,`\vhich pass through the slots 7: of said arms.

4 This provision of the slotted arms K K le enables the foot-rest I and leaf` G to be folded down under the chair, as shown in fig; l.

When placed in its reclining position, the chair is prevented from upsetting by the inwardly-projecting studs L, which come in contact with the hooksM, that are rigidly attached to the trestles C C.

If desired, the feet of the tr'estles may be furnished with casters, so as to admit of the chair being readily moved from oneroom to another.

When in use as a rockingchair,'the leaf G, foot-rest I,`and arms K, are folded iu under the` seat ofthe chair, as shown in fig. 1, in which position they are not in the Way of the feet or garments of the occupant, and

it will be seen, that, as the chair vibrates on the rockers B B' and trestles C C', there is no liability of the rockers cutting and wearing out the carpets, as isl the case with the ordinary rocking-chair, besides which, the lmotion is so uniform and easy that it can be enjoyed by the aged and invalide.

To place the chair in its reclining position, the body isthrown back until the studs L come in contact withv the hooks M, as shown inl fig. 2, after which the foot-rest I is unfolded, the stops ff' limiting the distaceto whichit is opened. 1

I claim herein as new, and of my inventon` l 1. The combination, substantially as described, of the chair A, rockers B B', trestlcs C C-"c c', lexiblc straps E E' e e', stopsff', leaf G g, foot-rest I, and slotted arms J J' K K' lc, or their mechanical equivalents, for the purpose set forth. I
