Description

PATENTED DEC. 26, 1905. A. A. FREY.
PLOW.
APPLIOATION FILED DEG.29,1904.
g; mm M a 1/ Z m f 47 9 UNITED STATES PATENT orrron Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1905.
Application filed December 29, 1904. Serial No. 238,868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMzr A. FREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Martins Creek, in the countyof Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in plows, and more particularly to means whereby the moldboard may be adjusted in an angular position to vary the width of the furrow.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive adjusting means for plows which will be well adapted for the purpose intended.
With-the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be'hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of a plow with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. F ig. 3 is a detail rear end elevation of the plow-beam. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical longitudinal sectional view through the rear end of the plow-beam and the adjusting means, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the apertured bar or rack of the adjusting device.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the plow-beam, and 2 denotes a plow the standard 3 of which is pivotally mounted in a metallic sleeve 4, which extends through the beam 1. The plow 2 carries the usual handles 5 and is adapted to be adjusted or held in any desired angular position by my improved adjusting and locking device 6. The latter comprises an apertured bar or rack 7, which connects the handles 5 and which is slightly curved on an arc concentric with the pivot of the plow. This rack-bar 7 is channeled on its under side, as shown in Fig. 4, and has its flanges provided with alining openings 8. Said rack-bar has its opposite ends bolted or otherwise secured to the handles 5 and is adapted to slide in a guide 9, which is secured upon the under side of the rear end of the plow-beam. This guide is preferably formed by bending a strip of metal, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings, so as to form a guide-loop 10 to receive the rack 7 and a dependin apertured lug 1 1. A locking-b olt 13 is slidab ly mounted in registering openings in the vertical portions of the guideloop 10 and in the lug 11. Said openings are adapted to register with the openings 8 in the rack-bar, so that the bolt 13 may pass therethrough to lock the said parts together. A coil-spring 14, which surrounds the reduced end 12 of the bolt be tween the loop 10 and lug 11, is adapted to hold said bolt normally in its closed or proj ected position, and said bolt is adapted to be retracted to release the rack 7 by a bell-crank 15, which is pivoted, as shown at 16, in a recess formed in the end of the beam 1 and has its lower bifurcated end pivotally connected to the projecting end 12 of the bolt, as shown at 17 The opposite end of said bellcrank is pivotally connected by a link 18 to a pivoted handpiece 19 on an operating-lever 20. The latter has its lower end pivoted in a recessed bracket-plate 21, which is secured upon the upper side of the beam 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
The construction, operation, and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that as the handpiece 19 and the end of the lever are grasped and the latter is moved forwardly the bell-crank 15 will move the sliding bolt 13 rearwardly against the tension of the spring 12, so as to disengage the forward end of said bolt from the rack 7. When the bolt is in this position, the plow may be adjusted at any desired angle with respect to the beam and may be secured in such adjusted position by permitting the bolt 13 to pass through alining apertures 14 and 8, as will be readily understood.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a beam, a plow pivotally mounted thereon, a frame carried by said plow, a. guide-loop upon said beam, an apertured bar slidable in said guide and secured to said frame, a sliding bolt in said. guide adapted to enter the apertures in said bar to lock said plow to said beam, and means for operating said sliding bolt.
2. The combination of a plow-beam, a plow pivotally mounted thereon, a handleframe carried by said plow, a guide-loop se- IIO cured upon the under side of said beam and and a lever for operating said bell-crank, sub
formed with an apertured lug and a loop hav stantially as described.
ing alined apertures, an apertured rack-bar In testimony whereof I have signed my secured to said handle-frame and slidably name to this specification in the presence of 5 mounted in said gu de-loop, a sliding bol in two subscribing Witnesses.
the lug and loop of said bracket, a spring for projecting said bolt through the apertures in AM Z1 FREY' said guide-loop and said rack-bar, a bell- Witnesses: crank pivotally mounted upon said beam SUSAN A. FREY,
o andIpivotally connected to said sliding bolt, HARVEY B. FREY.
