Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1905.
Application filed October 16, 1905. Serial No. 283,005.
To (LZZ 7071 0712, zit may concern.-
Be it known that we, HOMER A. COFFMAN and CLARENDON B. CARTER, citizens of the United States, residing at Keota, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Portable Hoisting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to portable hoisting apparatus capable of being moved from place to place and adapted for elevating commodities of various kinds, and has for its object to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
WVith these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as here-- inafter fully described and claimed:
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing the figure is a perspective view of the improved device.
The improved device consists of a mast 10, resting upon a sill member 11 and supported by braces 12 therefrom, and with a stay member 13, movably coupled, as at 14, to the upper end and secured, as by stakes 15, in the ground (indicated at 16) at some distance from the mast. Attached, as at 17, to the mast is a boom 18, supported from the mast by stay-rods 19. Depending from the boom and spaced from the mast 18 is a vertical stop member 20, and connecting the lower end of this stop member with the mast 10 is a staybar 21. Connected at 22 to the vertical member is a track-rod 23, the track-rod extending parallel to the boom and coupled at 24 to the same. Movably disposed upon the track 23 is atraveler 25, having a cable-sheave 26 and trip-lever 27, the latter adapted to engage a trip-stop 28 on the track 23. Attached to the mast 10 near the boom 18 is a snatch-block 29, and likewise attached to the mast near the sill is another snatch-block 30. Connected at 31 to the traveler is a hoisting-cable 32,
leading thence around a guide sheave 33, thence around the guid e-sheave 26 in the traveler, and thence through the snatch-blocks 29 30 to the power by which the load is elevated,
the power not being shown, as it forms no part of the present invention. The guidesheave 33 is provided with a stud 34, adapted to engage the inner end of the trip-lever 27 and disengage the same when theload has been elevated to the required height, as hereinafter explained. Attached to the frame of the sheave 33 is a trip member consisting of a stock 35, having an integral hook 36 at one side and a falling arm 37 at the other side and with a trip-lever 38,'engaging the falling arm and held yieldably in engagement therewith by a spring 39. Attached to the rear or "spring end of the trip-lever 38 is a pullcord 40.
The receptacle shown by way of illustration for containing the load to be elevated consists of an ordinary scraper 41, having spaced handles 42 43 and two bails 44 45, the forward bail serving the twofold purpose of the draft appliance by which the scraper is drawn forward when gathering its load and also as a means for supporting the forward end of the loaded scraper from the falling arm 37 of the trip member while the rear bail is engaged with the hook 36, as shown.
When gathering the load, the bail 44 rests idly upon the handles, while the draft-animals or other power is coupled to the bail 45. When the load has been gathered, the scraper is drawn beneath the outer end of the boom 18, while the wagon into which the scraper is to be discharged is drawn alongside the mast with the inner side of the wagon-box beneath the vertical member 20. The traveler being adjusted to its outermost position upon the track 23, with the trip-lever 27 engaged with the trip-stop 28, as shown, and the trip 35 lowered, the rear bail 44 is coupled to the hook 36 and the forward bail 45 coupled to the falling arm 37 and the lock-lever 38 applied. The loaded scraper is then elevated until the stop 34 strikes the top arm 27 and releases the same from the stop-lug 28, when the continued pulling upon the cable 32 will carry the loaded scraper toward the mast and over the wagon until the scraper strikes the member 20 and prevents further movement toward the mast. When this occurs, the at rear bail 4a being retained by the hook 36, and thus keeping the scraper connected to the operating apparatus, so thatit can be returned to its former position by drawing the traveler 35 outwardly along the track 23 by means of the pull-cord 40 until the trip-lever 27 again engages the stop 28. The scraper is then permitted to fall slowly to the ground by stacking up the draw-cable and is then arranged for another load.
The device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, and employed for any purpose requiring devices of this character.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. In a device of the class described, a supporting-mast, a boom extending from said mast, a vertical stop member depending from said boom and spaced from said mast, a traveler movable relative to said boom and a hoisting means associated with said traveler, whereby the load may be elevated and moved toward the mast and limited in its movement in one direction by said stop member.
2. In a device of the class described, a supporting-mast, a boom extending from said mast, a vertical stop member depending from said boom and spaced from said mast, a track connected at one end to said stop member and at the other end to said boom, a traveler operating on said track, and a hoisting means associated with said traveler, whereby the load when elevated and moved longitudinally of said track is limited in its movement in one direction by said stop members.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto afiixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
