Be it known that we, A. E. BLOOD, J. B, BLOOD, and W. POPE, of Lynn, vin the county of Essex, and. State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Infants Couch-or Cradle;. and we do here'byideclare that the followingis a full and exact description ofthe construction and operationo'f the same,re'f`erence being had to the accompanying-drawings, making apart of this spcciicationi Figure I being aperspective view of the whole.

Figure II showing the couch detached from its supports, the upholstery being removed so as to show the bows B B. i l I The object of our invention is to construct an elastic basket-like couch-body, and so Vto hang Asuch couch,4 upon suitable standards or other supports, that it shall be capable ofrieceiv'ingpeculiar vertical vibratory, undulating, or tossing movements, resembling the motions of a nurses arms, and also to admit of being swung laterally, when desired. f v

We construct the body of the couch by `forming, from a light framework or scroll-work, two sides, A A, of suitable length and'depth, and then fastening these sides in parallel positions, and at a proper distance apart, by passing'from each other anyde'sired number of curved strips or bows, of some springy material, B B; those fastened to the lower edges of the sides forming a. curved bottom', andv those attached to the ends forming the' curved heads or ends of the couch.

The bows or.hoops at the bottom can 4be dispensed with, if desired, using a suicient numbei` at the ends to give the requisite strength. The whole of this skeleton or frame may be upholstered in any tasteful manner, i the bed or sacking being attached to the lower edges of the frame, and stretched directly" across thebody, above the bottom hoops, without sagging so as to come in contact with them. Bows of a less depth maybe used, and thebedding or pillow placed directly upon them. v

In order to mount this body, we take two uprights or standards, D D, provided with suitable feet, secured' to each by horizontal bars, ofthe required length, E E. From the tops of these standards we suspend the body of the couch by any wires, strips, straps, or bows, elastic or non-elastic, marked F F, the points of attachment to the body being-formed by allowing the sides to project suficiently teclear the. heads. I

Instead of upright standards, the couch may be suspended from brackets attached to the wall of a room or any suitablesupport. 4 l

The alternate compression and relaxing of the bows B B, contained in the couch-body, give the Vertical movements above described, whether the couch be suspended by elastic-or nouelastic hangings, but this result is facilitated by the use of elastic hangingsequivalent tothose shown in the drawingsat F F.

The movements of the couch may be produced by applying the hand to the top, but to' cause the vertical Y movements we prefer to applythe power'below. To accomplish this, we provide a lever, Gr, having its fiilerum at one of the horizontal foot-bars, E, and projecting outward sufficiently to form a treadle, G', the other end passing `under the couch, so as when raised to engage land connect with a wire, S, bent bail-like, andattached to the lower part ofthe couch-body, and thereby impart motion to the same. This treadle-bar also serves,'when vin connection with the' couch-body, to hold it in proper'position, and prevent its careening too much .to either' side.

What we claimvas our invention; and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.-,

1. In constructing an infants couch, the combination ofthe sides A A, in combination with the bowsB B, substantially as and for' the purpose set forth. 3. Arranging the treadle-bar G insu'ch relation to the couch that it can be raised to connect) with and operate the same, and, whenno't in use, to drop clear of the couch, and allow it to be swung laterally, substantially as described. Y
