Inventor UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. GRAHAM, OF CANTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO PARLIN & ORENDORFF COMPANY, OF CANTON, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
Specification bf Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed October 23, 1905. Serial No. 284,001.
To all whom. it may concern:
and to also provide whatever adjustment the various appliances may need.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of alisterbeam having secured thereto the different parts that constitute a complete attachment for the soil-cutting appliances. side elevation of a beam and attachment equipped with a seed-tube having a shovel thereon, a root-cutter, and a frame furnished with covering-shovels. Fig. 3 is a diagram of a sweep. Fig. 4 is a perspective representation of a middle-breaker. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a beam and attachment equipped with a root-cutter, a seed-tube, a subsoiler, and a frame having covering-shovels. Fig. 6 is a plan of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a perspective detail of a subsoiler, and Fig. 8
is a plan of the pair of plates that comprise the primary element on my attachment.
The beam 1 has the usual downward extension at its rear end. The plates 2 and 2 are adapted to be secured to the beam and to provide for connecting all other parts. To accomplish the desired end, the plates 2 2 approach each other throughout their intermediate parts to a distance corresponding with the thickness of the standard of the subsoiler.
They are turned apart at their front ends, as,
ferent elevations to provide for the attaching- Fig. 2 is a bolt 33 of the covering-frame, and the bosses 11 are bored to. admit the securing-bolt 11 of the subsoiler-standard.
The shank 11 is divided throughout its upper part. It straddles the downward-extended end of the beam and the plates thereon. It is pivoted at 12 to swing vertically backward and forward, and its upper end 13 is adjustably secured to the plates. To provide for the adjustment of the shank, the end 13 is slotted at 1-1 concentric with the pivot 12 and is serrated in itsouter faces. Washers 15 are serrated to conform to the serrations of the. shank, and the shank is clamped in place by a bolt extending through the slot 14, through the washers, and through the plates and the beam.
A bracket 17 is carried on clamping-bolts 32 of the attachment-plates. It has a horizontal extension projecting rearwardly, and a rod 18 is pivotally conjoined to the rear end of the horizontal extension of the bracket. Beam-bars 30 for the covering-shovels 24 may be secured to the attachment-plates through either of a set of holes through bosses 10, and they are curved to bring their lower rear ends into position to properly carry the shovels. A crossbar 22 acts as a strut-brace to hold the shovel-beams a proper distance apart, and it is secured in place by bolts 23. A plate 21 is secured to the cross-bar at the longitudinal center thereof, and it has a horizontal surface which is directly over the rear extension of bracket 17 and isbored to receive the rod 18. The upper end of the rod 18 is threaded. A lock-nut 19 is screwed onto the-threaded end of the rod, and upon the rod between the nut and'the plate 21 is placed a compressionspring 20.
The seed-tube 16 is clamped between the rearward extensions 4 of the attachmentplates. It may be provided with a shovel 26, and it may be shifted vertically to vary the depth of cut of the shovel by loosening bolts 32, making the shift, and retightening the bolts.
The intermediate surfaces of the attachment-plates and the ribs 6 6 thereon form a recess 9 for the standard 27 of the subsoiler 28. The standard has a plurality of holes at dilferent heights, and the subsoiler is held higher or lower by inserting securing-bolt 11 through the holes 11 of the attachment-plates and through an upper or lower hole in the subsoiler-shank.
The root-cutter, which is a short runnerformed blade, is demanded where roots prevail. The shovel on the seed-tube provides a depression or furrow to receive the seed, and when the subsoiler is substituted for the shovel the seed is supplied with a bed of loose fine soil upon which to fall.
The covering-shovels may be adjusted with relation to pitch or inclination by raising or lowering the hitch of the beams on the attachment-plates, and the tendency of the shovels to enter the soil may be varied by screwing nut 19 up or down on rod 18, and thereby weakening or increasing the beam-lifting tendency of the spring 20. The shovel 26 and the subsoiler are adjusted with relation to the attachment-plates, as hereinbefore explained, the tube 16 being raised or lowered in the case of the shovel and the standard being shifted between the plates in the case of the subsoiler.
The sweep, the middle-breaker, and the rootcutter are each adjusted as to pitch or inclination by swinging the shank on pivot 12 and securing it in place.
The beam 1 is lowered more or less to determine the general depth of cut of the soil-cutting appliances.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lister-planter, the combination of a beam having a downward rear extension, a pair of plates secured to the downward extension of the beam and projecting rearward therefrom, a seed-tube clamped between the projecting parts of the plates, and a shank for soil-cutting appliances swingably adjustable on the plates in approximate alinement with the downward extension of the beam.
2. In a lister-planter, the combination with a beam having a downward rear extension, of a pair of plates attached to the downward extension of the beam on opposite sides thereof and projected rearward therefrom, a seedtube clamped between the rearward extensions of the plates by bolts inserted through the plates in the rear of the tube, a bracket held in place by the tube-clamping bolts and extended rearward from the tube and a pair of perforated bosses on the outer surfaces of the plates in front of the tube, for the attachment the downward-terminating beam thereof, of a v pair of plates attached to opposite sides of the beam, extended rearward out of contact with each other for a distance suflicient to form a space for a subsoiler-standard and shaped to receive a seed-tube between their rear ends, bolts for clamping the plates onto the seedtube, a bracket held in the rear of the seedtube by the tube-clamping bolts and extended rearward, a pair of shovel-beams pivotally hitched to the plates in front of the seed-tube, a cross-bar conjoining the shovel-beams, a plate on the cross-bar, a threaded rod pivotally connected with the rear end of the bracket and extended through a hole in the plate on the cross-bar, a nut on the threaded end of the rod and a spring on the rod between the nut and the plate.
4. In a lister-planter, the combination with the downward-terminating beam thereof, of a pair of plates attached to opposite sides of the beam, extended rearward therefrom and forming between their extended surfaces a recess for a subsoiler-standard, a recess for a seedtube and a space for a spring-rod bracket.
5. In a lister-planter, the combination with the downturned beam of the planter of a pair of plates attached to opposite sides of the beam and extended rearward therefrom, a seed-tube clamped between the rear extensions of the plates, a shank for soil-cutting appliances pivoted between its ends on the lower, front corners of the plates and adjustably secured to the plates at its upper end, a bracket secured to the plates and extended rearwardly therefrom, beams for covering-shovels pivotally connected with the sides of the plates, a crossbar for the beams of the covering-shovels, a plate on the cross-bar, a rod pivotally connected with the rear end of the bracket and extended through a hole in. the plate, a nut on the threaded end of the rod. and a spring on the rod between the nut and the plate.
In testimony whereof I sign my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
