IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,894}, dated November 11, 1862.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE M. GLEMENrs, of Kendnskeag, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented anew and Improved Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.

This invention relates to anew and improved implement or device for cultivating crops which are grown in hills or drills, such as corn, potatoes, 85c. V
The object of the invention is to obtain a device by which the crops may be thoroughly cultivated-that is to say, have the earth at each side of the plants plowed and thrown up I to them in a manner similar to that performed by the ordinary hand-hoe.
To this end the invention consists in the employment or use of two plows or shares attached to an adjustable frame provided with gage-rollers, and having the draft-pole and draw-bars attached to it in a novel way, as hereinafter fully shown and described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents the frame of the device, which is composed of three bars, at act, the latter, a, being the central bar, and attached at its front end by a hinge or joint, I), to a rod, B. The
bars a a are also attached by hinges or joints- 11 d are slightly curved, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the side bars, a a, may have a slightly oblique position relatively with the central bar, a.

Therod B has its ends bent at right angles to its main portion, as shown at i i, and the front ends of the parts t' are bent in the form of books for the purpose of connecting whiffletrees thereto.
1) is the draft-pole, which is attached to the rod B and E is a cross-bar, which is secured to the inner end of the draft-pole, and is bolted at its ends to the parts 1' i of the rod B. By this arrangement it will be seen that the frame A is allowed to work on the rod B, so that it may be raised and lowered from said rod as a center without affecting the draft-pole and line of draft. To the outer side of each bar, a, there is attached a curved bar, E. These bars extend downward in front of the bars a a, and terminate in forks k, in which rollers l are placed. The bars E are perforated each with aseries of holes, m, through any one of which a bolt, 12, passes into thebars a. The bars E by this means may be adjusted higher or lower at their front ends.
F F represent two shares, the front ends of which, at their lower edges, are curved inward, so as to resemble an ordinary share. These shares extend backward a considerable distance, being formed of narrow metal plates, and gradually'approach each other, a space, 0, being left between them, which space is in line with the draft-pole D and central bar, a, of the frame A, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The shares F are attached to standards a", which are secured to the bars aja of the frame A. As the machine is drawn along a horse walks in each furrow, and a share, F, is at each side of the row, and the earth is plowed up at each side of the row, the curved back ends of the shares drawing the earth up to the plants.
