Description

"PATENTEDMA'H, 1e51 1'. VANDERSL'IGE. MEAT CUTTING MACHINE.
each block. V I same disk through a curved apcrtu re 0 o and UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. r
THOMAS yANnEusL'IcE, or VALLEXI FORGE, PEN SYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT m M EAT-CUTTlNG-MACHINES Specification forming part oi Letters Patent No. 8,072, dated May 6, 185i.
' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS VANpERsLIcE, of Valley Forge, inthe countyof Chester and v State of Pennsylvania, have invented a" new and useful Improvement in Machines for Cutting Meat for Sausages; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexeddrawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is'avertical viewof the machine in an open position. Fig. 2-is a transverse section representing especially one of thecutters with its respective adj usting-plate; and Rig. 3 is an end view showing thediseharging-' aperture and sliding gate. lhe principal features of this lnvention consist in an arrangement for adjusting the positions of the 'severahrotary cutters, so as to keep the edges thereof in contact with the peripherv of the cylindrical chamber within V which they revolve.
The casing of this machine consists of an oblong cubical trunk A B, the interior of.
which has the form of a hol-low cylinder five inches in diameter, through the longitudinal center of which passes a mandrel c c, which has its bearings at the ends of the trunk, and one end of which is furnished with a crank or pulley. Upon this mandrel, near the right end of the trunk, is mounted a short cylinder D, three inches in diameter, from the periphery ofnvhieh projects a helical flange e e, which extends to the periphery of the cylindrical chamber. The face or left side of the flange is at right angles with the axle, and the right side has an inclined curve from the apex of the flange to the periphery of the cylinder.
Upon the mandrel, between the flanged cyl inder and theleft end of the trunk, is mount eda series of circular blocks I I I, three inches in diameter and half an inch thick. Between the cylinder 1) and the right block and between each two of the blocks is adjusted a cutter J and an adjusting-plate K, the cutter and the plate being of equal thickness. The cutter is mounted upon a pivotpin oz, which projects from the left disk of Another pin -r projects from the enters the next succecdingblock, and whereby the blocks are secured in their proper d-rel, near the left end thereof, upon which is a circular screw-nut P, by which the entire series of blocks and plates are firmly pressed together, and whereby the latter are held fast in whatever relative position they are placed.
The use of the plates is to adjust the cutters in such positions that the most prominent part of the cutting-edge of each may workin. close contact with the periphery of the cylindrical chamber. I 4 Through the top of the trunk, (which is equal-in dimensions with the bottom and connected thereto by hinges and haspt-t} at the right end thereof, isa. yerticaL'teedingaperture L, and through the left end of the trunk is a discharging-aporture X, to which is adapted a sliding-gate 10, whereby the dis charge of the chopped meat is regulated. To the top of the bottom section of, the trunk, parallel with: the axle and extending from the front to the "periphery of the cutter-cyL indcr, (the series'of eircular blocks and plates,) is attached a horizontal plate Y,-in
the rear edge of which is a series of slots Z Z, of sulficient length and breadth to allow the cutters to pass through them, and whereby the latter, as also the periphery of the cutter-cylinder, are cleared from the meat which might otherwise adhere. to them. The posilions of the several cutters are soarranged as to succeed each othenin helical order, as,
represented in Figs. 1 and 2.
What I claim as 'my invention, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
I The herein-described mode of adjusting the cutters J by means of the adjusting plates K, as described.
In testimony whereof I have "hereunto signed my-namebefore two subscribing wit-l.
nesses. I I THOMAS .VANDERSLICE.
