Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. JIRUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Clamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clamping devices employed by carpenters, joiners, cabinetmakers, pattern-makers, and like mechanics for holding the work-while being glued or otherwise secured and for similar purposes, and has for its object to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efl'iciency and utility of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the inventlon is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without` departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking toward the movable clamp-j aw, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, looking toward the stationary clamp-jaw. Fig. 4 is a perspective view, enlarged, of the half-nut. Fig. 5 is a perspective view, enlarged, of a portion of the yieldable cap member.
The improved device comprises a clampbar 10 of any desired size or length and provided at one side with a longitudinal channel 11. Mounted for rotation within the channel 11 as by bearings 12 13, is a screw 14, provided at one end with an operating crankhandle 15. A clamp-j aw 16 is attached rigidly to the bar 10 at one end and extending from the side opposite to the channel 11 and screw 14, the jaw 16 and the bearing 13 preferably being in one single casting, as represented in Figs. 1 and 3. Slidably disposed upon the same side of the bar 10 as the stationary jaw- 16 1s an opposing jaw 17, and bearing agalnst the lower or outer side of the screw 14 is a half-nut 18. The half-nut 18 is disposed out of alinement with the movable jaw 17 and is connected therewith by spaced side arms 19 20, which are connected beneath the half-nut by a plate 21 and secured thereto, as by cap-screws 22. By this arrangement it will be obvious that if the movable jaw be tilted toward the stationary jaw with its corner 23 bearing upon the bar 10 the halfnut will be detached from the screw 14', leaving the jaw 17 free to slide to any required extent upon the clamp-bar to provide for its quick adjustment, and when adjusted to the required extent the instant pressure is applied in the opposite direction the half-nut will rengage the screw 14, and when the latter is rotated by its crank member 15 whatever object or structure is placed between the jaws will be firmly clamped.
A cap member 24 is disposed over the screw 14 opposite to the half-nut 18 and provided with spaced bolts 25, extending through flanges 26 27, extending from the half-nut 18, the rods having terminal heads 28 and surrounded by springs 29, bearing against the flanges of the half-nut and exerting their force to maintain the half-nut in yieldable engagement with the screw. The cap member 24 will freely slide over the threads of the screw and will not, therefore, prevent the ready and quick adjustment of the movable j aw when required.
It is obvious that as the arms 19 and 20 are curved downwardly and forwardly any strain exerted by the screw 14 upon the halfnut 18 will tend to clamp the nut the more firmly upon the screw and that a reverse movement of the screw will cause the arms 19 20 to move angularly about the corner 23 as a pivot and automatically disengage the nut from the screw to permit its return movement and before the face of the movable jaw is disengaged from the work.
The device is simple in construction, can be manufactured at small expense and 4of any required size and of any required strength, and may be adapted for a variety of purposes or wherever devices of this character are usually employed.
Having fully described the invention, what isv claimed is- 1. In a device of the class described, a clam -bar provided with a longitudinal channel a ong its under side, a screw mounted for rotation within the channel, a rigid jaw carried at one end of the bar, a jaw slidably IOO IIO
mounted upon the top ofthe bar and having downwardly and forwardly extending side arms connected by a plate beneath the bar and spanning the Channel, a half-nut mounted rigidly upon the plate and extending upwardly within the channel and in engagement with the screw and so arranged that a forward pressure upon the movable jaw disengages the half-nut from the screw.
