To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Nnss E. CARSTENSEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cedarbluffs, in the county of Saunders and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pincers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in tools of the plier type, designed primarily for use in repairing the links of sproc et-chains or the like.
The main object of the invention is the provision of means in the tool of the class described for readily disconnecting or connecting the links of a sprocket-chain to permit the repair of such lmks or insertion of new ones. Y
The invention in its preferred form of construction will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective viewof my improved tool. Fig. 2 1s a side elevation of the same, illustrating its use in connecting the links of a sprocket-chain. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the use of the tool for disconnecting the llnks of a sprocket-chain.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout the several views, my improved tool com rises two handle members 1 and 2, terminal y provided with offset disk portions 3, arranged to be pivotally connected by a suitable pivot-pin 4. Forward of the pivotal connection the handle 1 is provided with what I term the bed of the tool, designed to receive and support the link in operation. The member comprises an arcuate body portion 5 of a width equal to the combined width of the disks 3 and formed on its upper edge with an approximately S-shaped face 6. An anvil 7 of less width than the body 5 projects forwardly therefrom, formed with a concaved face 8 immediately forward of the face 6 of the body portion, the curvature of which face 8 is approximately concentric with the curvature of the end of the link. The anvil terminates in a projection 9, rising above the face 8, to provide a bearing-point for the links, as hereinafter described. The handle 2 forward of its pivotal connection is formed with a squared head 10, also of a width equal to the full width of both disks 3 and formed on its IOWGI face to conform to the face of the bed 6,
as at 1 1. The head terminates in vertical alinemept with the forward edge of the face 6, roviding an operating edge 12, immedi ate y overlying the extreme forward edge of the bed.
The upper surface of the head 10 is squared, as at 13, to serve the usual function of a hammer. Immediately in rear of the disks 3 each handle is provided with asquared steel block 14, respectively offset to register their proximate edges, whereby to provide a wire-cutter of usual construction. The rear end of the handle 1 is shaped to provide a screwdriver 15, while the rear end of the handle 2 is bifurcated to provide a tack-puller 16.
In operation of my improved tool as a linkconnector the body of the link to be joined in the chain, as 18, is arranged to straddle the ends 7, with its side bars abutting a ainst the shoulders 19, formed at the junctlon of the bed 5 and the anvil 7. The end link 20 of the chain is placed over the projection 9 of the anvil with its end bar inserted in the la strip 21 of the link 18. A depression of t e head 10 through suitable operation of the handles 1 and 2 will cause the operating edge 12 of said head to contact with the end of the lapstrip 21 and bend the same about the end bar of the link 20, thus connecting the links. A link, as 22, to be disconnected is arranged with its connected end resting approximately in the face 8 of the anvil and the end of its lapstrip 23 immediately beneath the o crating edge 12 of the head 10, the body of t e adjacent link 24 in the chain straddling the proj ection 9 of the anvil. Pressure upon the handles 1 and 2 will cause the operatmg edge of the head 10 to open at the lap-strip of the link 22 and thereby permit its ready disconnection of the link 24.. It will be noted that in both operations the head of the link is supported by the face 6 of the bed=plate and by the face 8 of the anvil and that said linkhead is maintained in position and against upward movement by the projection 9 of the anvil 7.
In the use of my improved tool links may be readily connected to or disconnected from the sprocket-chain, the sole requirement for erfect operation being the positioning of the link with relation to the head and to the anvil 7. The other adjuncts described in connection with my improved tool serve their usual and ordinary functions, and no detail description thereof is deemed necessary herein.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tool of the class described comprising connected members, one of said members being formed with a head and the other of said members being provided with a curved bed to cooperate with the head and with an anvil rojecting forward of the bed, the head of the first-mentioned member being shaped to con form to the shape of the bed, and terminatirig in vertical alinementwith the forward the first-mentioned member being shaped to conform to the shape of the bed and terminating in veri icgl alinement-with the forward edge of the 3. A tool of the class described comprising pivotally-connected handle members, one of said members being provided forward of the pivot with a bed having a curved'face, and with an anvil projecting forwardly of thebed and formed with a concavedface and with a vertically-projecting portion, the other of said members being provided witha head terminating in alinement with the forward edge of the bed and formed with a-face curved to conform with the face of the bed.
