Description

GOLF CLUB. APPLICATION FILED APR.17, 1905.
7&2 556666 9 fiZVef/z Z01" V y. fire OZ Wag-'26 4/ w (\7 ,/J WW? 7 2 PATENTED DEC. 12, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERCY A. VAILE, WESTMINSTER, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO FREDERICK HENRY AYRES, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
GOLF-CLUB.
To 0% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERoY ADoLPHUs VAILE, barrister-at-law of the Supreme Court of- New Zealand,a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Whitehall Court, in the city of Westminster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf-Clubs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in golf-clubs, particularly such as have the head portions made of metal.
' Figure 1 shows a front View of a golf-club held inclined with the invention applied, the shaft being partially broken out for convenience of the drawing. Fig. 2 by a view looking at the surface in rear of the striking-face, and Fig. 3 by a plan view, show, to an enlarged scale, a golf-club head with the shaft broken away a short distance above the socket.
According to an approved embodiment of the invention shown by the drawings the socket portion a, into which the wooden or other shaft b is secured, is alined relatively to the head a, so that an imaginary line 1 1 drawn longitudinally through the shaft 6 intersects diagonally a line 2 2 drawn longitudinally and centrally through and parallel with the striking-face c of the head of the club at a point 3, substantially mid way of such face or else somewhat nearer the toe & than the heel 5 thereof. In other words, a line drawn parallel with the axis of the shaft Z) and in the plane of the striking-face 0 will cross that face in an inclined direction at the center 3 or slightly toward the toe end 4 thereof.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 17, 1905- 'Serial No. 256,053.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
The metal or socket portion a of the shaft 6 instead of being joinedto the head 0 at a point in or about the place 3 where such imaginary line would intersect the horizontal line referred to is bent or downwardly curved at 6, projecting thence directly toward the point 7 above the heel end 5 of the head, and this socket portion is again curved at? downward, developing into the upper part of the heel. By means of this formation of the socket portion relatively to thehead I am enabled to obtain a limited extent of spring connection. This construction further enables the blow of the club-head to be delivered with greater accuracy and increased effect with increased ease in adjustment of the implement.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- In a golf-club, a handle, and a head having a neck projecting inwardly on an angle to the latter and upwardly at an inclination to aline the handle diagonally of the plane of said head and to allow a clean view of the center of the latter.
In testimonywhereof l have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PERCY A. VAILE.
