In carrying out the invention I employ a cover 1, composed, preferably, of leather and consisting of sides 2, united by a back piece 3.

Hooks 5 are provided at their upper terminals with V-shaped grooves 7 for the reception of V-shaped tongues 8 on the upper Tongues 8 engage grooves 7 when the hooks 5 and 6 are closed, and thus hold the latter in alinement.

tively, the former of which overlap, while the latter under-lap, the adjacent portions of the hook-carrying members in order to operatively hold them together and cause the adjacent edges of said members to move in unison. Tongues 14 l5-are connected by centrally-disposed webs 16 and flare outwardly (see Figs. 1 and 5) to permit the upward-and-downward movements of the adjacent portions of the hook-carrying members.

The device is secured to the inner surface of the book-back by a strip of tar-board 17, to which plate 9 is secured by rivets 18, extending through holes 9*, marginal recesses .19 in the hook-carrying members, and holes 20 in the tongue-plate.

In assembling the parts the adjacent sides of the hook-carrying members are placed in position between tongues 14 15, as shown in Fig. 3. The retaining-plate 9 is then placed over the hook-carrying members, with slots 12 registering'with hooks 5 6, and expanded so flanges 11 will embrace the outer edges of said hook-carrying members and hold the latter against accidental movement when the hooks thereon occupy an open or closed position. Plate 9 is then secured by rivets 18 to the tar-board, which latter is glued or otherwise secured to the inner surface of back 3.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character described, hook-carrying members, a resilient member arranged to hold the hooks in an open or closed position, and a member engaging the inner sides of the hook-carrying members.

In a device of the character described, a plurality. of hook-carrying members adapted to hold the hooks in an open or closed position, a resilient member having marginal flanges to engage the outer edges of the hookcarrying members, and a member engaging the inner sides of said hook-carrying members. 3. In a device of the character described, a plurality of hook-carrying members adapted to hold the hooks in an open or closed position, a resilient member having slotted marginal flanges which engage the outer edges of the hook-carrying members and permit the hooks to open, and a member engaging the inner sides of said hook-carrying members.

4:. In a device of the character described, a pair of hook-carrying members adapted to hold the hooks in an open or closed position, a resilient member detachably engaging the hook-carrying members and adapted to secure them from accidental movement when the hooks are'in an open or closed position, and a tongue member detachably engaging the adjacent edges of said hook-carrying members.

5. In a device of the character described, a plurality of hook-carrying members adapted to hold the hooks in an open or closed position, a resilient member engaging the hookcarrying members and adapted to secure them from accidental movement When the hooks are in an open or closed position, and amember provided With a plurality of tongues lapping the adjacent portions of said hookcarrying members.

6. In a device of the character described, a plurality'of hook-carrying members adapted to hold the hooks in an open or closed position, a resilient member engaging the hookcarrying members and adapted to secure them from accidental 'movement When the hooks are in an open or closed position, and a member provided With a plurality of alternately-arranged tongues Which engage the adjacent portions of said hook-carrying members.

7. In a device of the character described, a

plurality of hook-carrying members adapted to hold the hooks in an open or closed position, a resilient member engaging the hookcarrying members and adapted to secure them from accidental movement When the hooks are in an open or closed position, and a member provided With a plurality of alternately-arranged tongues flaring at their outer ends and nnderlapping and overlapping the adjacent portions of said hook-carrying members.

8. In a device of the character described, a plurality of hook-carrying members adapted to hold the hooks in an open or closed position, a resilient member overlapping and engaging the hook-carrying members and adapted to secure them from accidental movement when the hooks are in an open or closed position, a member engaging the inner sides of the hook-carrying members, and a strip of suitable material underlying said hook-carrying members and secured to the resilient member, in combination With a suitable cover to which the strip is secured.
